24 hours of Windows server 2008 (Part 13 of 24) Questions and Answer Log (04-16-08)

Today, I delivered part 13 of the 24 hours of Windows Server 2008 webcast series.  There weren't too many questions asked during the session, but for the few that were, I did answer them.  Below is the Q&A log from the webcast.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Question: Will RSAT allow us to manage Windows 2000 servers?

Answer: Yes, it will allow you to manage some aspects of Windows 2003 Servers as well as Windows 2000 Servers. Please see this article for more information: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/941314.

Question: I unable to find licensing snap-in in W2k8. Does OEM user or dev CALs require activation procedure or installment on a server?

Answer: The Windows Server 2008 needs to be activated regardless of OEM or Volume License or Retail. The question for the OEM install is who activates it (OEM or you). As for Client Access Licenses, you will still need to purchase the correct amount, but you don’t have to enter it into any tracking / logging service. In fact, that service is no longer even present in Windows Server 2008 (I’m referring to the License Logging Service). Here’s a nice KB article: https://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;824196.

Question: Can you add a Windows 2003 print server? I might have missed this from earlier.

Answer: Yes, you can add Windows 2003 Print Servers to the Windows Server 2008 Print Management console.

Question: What is the function of the printers entry under User Configuration or Computer Configuration ->Preferences->Control Panel Settings -> Printers? (Group Policy on Vista SP1)

Answer: Preferences are a new capability in Windows Server 2008 Group Policies that allow you to set preferences for certain settings that can then be changed by the user. Printers happen to be one of the items that you can pre-configure as a preference for users. Depending on how you deploy the Preferences, the user can choose to keep what you have already configured for them or they can delete it or add to it.

Are there any forthcoming plans of releasing the RSAT for Windows XP SP3?
