SPYK Property Search : Aussie Map Realestate Mashup

Adam Cogan (Local Regional Director, Chief Architect at SSW, MVP, User Group Leader, Star of DNRTV, and man of many rules), dropped me a note about a project he has been incubating - by Tim Kremer (which was developed in his spare time, with no affiliation with Adam or SSW). The project is  Spyk Property Search.

It is a property search application, using the goodness of Microsoft Virtual Earth, and "Atlas" (now known as Microsoft AJAX Library & ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions) .

When you click on a pushpin, you get info about the property

Cool!

Nice to see these local mashups which use the microsoft maps, appearing online.

So far, I have spotted 6,

  1. Findit : New Aussie online classifieds
  2. TechEd Atlas Mashup Demo
  3. Student Partners Locater
  4. Developer User Groups
  5. IT Pro User Groups
  6. Spyk Property Search

Any I have missed?

It's too bad they didn't use Google Maps, though. The interface and map rendering with Google Maps is a lot nicer.

Looks like a perfect place for some clustering. Virtual Earth has an issue with rendering more then 200 pushpins on a single screen. Rather then only showing 200 you should look at ways to cluster points to show more information to the user. http://www.soulsolutions.com.au/Articles/ClusteringVirtualEarth/tabid/72/Default.aspx

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

    Hi James,
My partner actually wrote an abstraction of both VE and google maps, so we could interchange them. We found Google maps couldn't handle large numbers of points with smooth scrolling. The VE Api is also more powerful and gives better developer control.

    Hi John,
Yes, I've looked at clustering, which is great for showing regional demographics, and other such aggregated information. However I chose to go with a random selection of points for a different user experience.

Looking forward to any feature requests.
