OpsMgr 2007 R2 backward compatibility to OpsMgr 2007 SP1

Microsoft recently announced the imminent availability of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 here.  With OpsMgr 2007 R2 RTM just weeks away, you may be wondering “what are the backward compatibility options of R2 and SP1”?

What’s supported -

  • OpsMgr 2007 SP1 Agents can report to a R2 Management Group.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 Agents can report to a SP1 Management Group. Caveat – Push install from a SP1 Management Group will not work on an Agent that already has a R2 Agent installed.  Administrators will have to manually add SP1 Management Group configuration to R2 Agents.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 Agents can co-exist with MOM 2005 SP1 Agents on the same monitored client.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 Agents are supported on Windows Server 2008 without any additional hotfixes. OpsMgr 2007 SP1 requires hotfixes 951327, 952664, 953290 and 954049.  Full details can be read Here. KB953141
  • Microsoft supports running all OpsMgr 2007 R2 components in any virtual environment, as long as the virtual machine meets minimum requirements as stated in the Supported Configuration Guide. See Note Below for what is NOT supported in an OpsMgr 2007 R2 virtual machine.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 Web Console can be run on any operating system that supports Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 supports monitoring the following non Windows Operating Systems
  • AIX 5.3 (POWER), 6.1 (POWER)
  • HP-UX 11IV2 (PA-RISC and IA64)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Server 4 (x86 and x64) and 5 (x86 and x64)
  • Solaris 8, 9, 10 (and x86 versions later that 120012-14)
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (x86) and 10 SP1 (x86 and x64)

What’s Not -

  • OpsMgr 2007 RTM Agents cannot report to an OpsMgr 2007 R2 Management Group. This should not be a surprise to anyone.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 does not support installing the 32 bit Agent on an operating system for x64 based computers.
  • Microsoft does not support the use of ‘point in time’ snapshots or writing changes to a temporary virtual drive for virtualized OpsMgr 2007 R2 components.
  • OpsMgr 2007 R2 does not support a 32bit Operations Manager DB, Reporting DW, or ACS DB on a x64 operating system.
  • Microsoft does not support any cluster technology other than Microsoft Cluster Services quorum node clusters.

Is it possible to have a SP1 Management Group and R2 Managemeng Group share the same data warehouse?
