@Ronald
ConfigMgr 2012 SP2 and ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1 are actually the same version number which is version 5.00.8239.1000 build 8239. To get a better understanding of the recent upgrade refer to Ian's blog below.

If I have multiple clients with version 5.00.7804.1000, what is my upgrade path going to be? I tried the R2 CU5, but i fails with error code 1642 which is:
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer an d that you have the correct upgrade patch."
Do I need to install a different client version first in order to upgrade? - Anonymous
November 05, 2015
@Ed Grant You should be installing whatever is the latest build version of your environment. The client should be able to upgrade previous versions but sometimes you may run into issues when you try to upgrade it. You can try to uninstall the previous client using CCMSetup.exe /Uninstall before attempting to install the new R2 agent along with the CU5 hotfix. To troubleshoot look at the ccmsetup.log file situated in the WindowsccmsetupLogs folder - Anonymous

Just upgraded to 1606 (Not installed the Update Rollup) and have conflicting version numbers:Hierarchy Settings Properties: Production & Pre-Production Client Version = 5.00.8412.1000Client Version (From Control panel CPL) = 5.00.8412.1007When I look in Monitoring > Client Status > Production Client Deployment I see 5.00.8412.1000 So why are my clients now installing 5.00.8412.1007 ??- Anonymous
November 06, 2016
Hi Pagey Client version 5.00.8412.1000 was an original release of 1606 before the Hotfix kb3180992 released the 1007 Client Hotfix as part of the standard 1606 release. See the blog below for some more details. I've updated the post to reflect both versions.http://prajwaldesai.com/early-wave-update-for-sccm-1606-kb3180992/

Hi Prajwal, We're looking to upgrade from SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 to SCCM 1606. I already understand that we'll need to upgrade to SCCM 1511 first and then to SCCM 1606, but I'm hoping we don't have to update all our existing console and clients twice to do this. Can you go from SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 client and consoles directly to SCCM 1606 client and consoles?. Don't want to wait after SCCM 1511 upgrade for clients to update to 1511 before we go to SCCM 1606. - Anonymous
