Visual Studio 2005 extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, version 1.1 RTM!!! + User guide Part 1.

Today we announced the availability of VSeWSS 1.1 RTM at the Office Developers Conference in San Jose, CA.  This is a great step forward for the visual studio tools for WSS.  We took a BUNCH of feedback from everyone that told us what they wanted changed/fixed. 

We will be posting to the SharePoint team blog shortly with the full official announcement.

Things to look for:

- Full WSP package editing support, including the ability to edit all the XML files manually if you desire :)

- New templates

- VB.Net support

- MANY MANY bug fixes :)

Things that will possibly bug you about this:

- No VS 2008 support. (we could not get this done in time for this release ... but watch this space)

- No 64bit support.  Again, we would loved to have done this ... but there are some hoops we need to jump through that are not as trivial as you might first think.

- Between 1.0 and 1.1 there were significant changes to the way the projects are structured.  For that reason projects created in 1.0 will most likely need to be re-created in 1.1.  Again, we would have loved to have gotten to this but you demanded so many cool features we wanted to spend our time giving you those.

We are also releasing a user guide for the extensions.  Today we are releasing the first part of that guide.  We will be releasing a lot  more of this guide in the next few months ... so keep an eye out for updates.

    Well, I guess I´ll have to wait then. I use VS 2008 and 64-bit, so I´m not one of the lucky ones. :-( Sounds great though, keep up the good work!

    Have been looking forward to these extensions.  I've just converted a project over to the RTM version and have successfully deployed the solution to a new site.  However if I try and redeploy the solution (without making any changes) it fails with a rather cryptic System.ArgumentException Error: Value does not fall within the expected range. Have been having problems with this all day - don't expect to be having problems as basic as this with an RTM...  will report back if I find a problem with my environment. Anyone else experience this? BTW - is a more verbose log file generated by the extensions?

    Hi Steve, Do you have any feature receivers in your project?  It sounds like some code might be running when the solution is deployed/Activated and that code is failing.  Also since it is only when you redeploy i suspect it is in some deactivation code. Failing that i would manually retract the solution, remove it (via central admin) and try the deploy again. Thanks, Chris.

    Hi Chris,  I don't have feature receivers (plenty of event receivers though), but I think it was something else going wrong as there's no longer a problem. Steps to resolve... First - I discovered that deleting the generated pkg folder resolved the problem.  But this was not an option as this re-gens all the feature id's so it breaks all instantiated objects based on old features... Second - I haven't had a chance to verify yet but I had some other projects open in the VS solution, and I tried removing them.  Since removing them the extensions are working great - which is very good news!  For completeness it would be interesting to see if the extension test plans included other types of project? FYI - the other types of projects in the solution were : Report Server, Web Site (for SmartPart dev) and a Setup Project.  I'm guessing, but do the extensions use reflection to resolve features in all open solutions - maybe this was causing the error? Strange why it was happening 'after' the first deploy though...  i guess I was trying so many different things to resolve that I may have missed what actually fixed it.  Appreciate the hints. Steve

    Chris, Found a problem with Report Server project being included in the solution - WSP View gives an error on refresh 'Error parsing solution'?   Removed and all is great Regards Steve

    It appears you removed the ability to easily enable event hanlders through the project properties screen.  Is writing the XML for these handlers the only way to enable them in this new version of the extensions?

    Hello! I'm getting an error, and I cannot figure out why! I add a Blank Site Definition to my Solution, build it, and deploy. This works great. When I try to deploy again I am presented with a System.ArgumentException when it hits the 'Creating solution ...' The error is a very descriptive 'Value does not fall within the expected range.' Any thoughts? To reiterate I have not added anything to this project yet, it is nothing but generated files.

    Hi gdmccarty, We are in the process of building version 1.2 as we speak.  That will have VS2008 support.  Expect this in June.  I know that is a way off ... but hang on in there! -Chris.

    Hi All When creating a list definition project in vs2005 the folder that contains allthe files of the list definition and event handler always has the name "ListDefinition1". can anyone help me how can I make the folder has the name of the project???

    Hello, I got the VS WSS ext 1.1, but the thing is it won't install before uninstalling the previous version. And the problem is that the extension is not showing in the Add/Remove programs :S! .... How can I uninstall the previous version of the extension?? Thanks.

    Hi Chris, It is June and I am about to start a new SharePoint project. What does it look like for VS2008 support for WSS 3.0? I am trying to decide whether to wait for VS2008 support or start using VS2005? Thanks, Len
