Women In IT 2008 Year in Review

2008 has been a great year for the Australian Women in IT community! We kicked off with the launch of the www.GeekGirlBlogs.com site created by Live Services MVP Bronwen Zande which features over 130 female women in IT who blog. If you are female, and you blog, make sure you sign up online.

Not long afterwards, we saw the launch of the Girl Geek Dinners in Sydney run by Damana Madden and then closely followed by Geek Girl Dinners in Melbourne & Brisbane.

The Girl Geek Dinners have been sponsored by a community group effort between the likes of Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, ThoughtWorks, Geekdom & Atlassian and this year we have had presentations ranging from Agile Development Methodolgy, Test Driven Development, Dynamic Languages, tips on designer & developer collaboration as well as tips on how to be a happy Programmer.

If you haven’t seen them yet, this year I also kicked off the Geek Girl Blogs Podcasting series in association to the www.GeekGirlBlogs.com site where I am lucky enough to have the great job of interviewing female role models working in IT & talking about the challenges they each face and amazing things they have done.

This year’s Microsoft Tech Ed Australia featured our inaugural Women in IT luncheon, where Elaine Brown from Microsoft UK spoke about the launch of www.evetech.com and facilitated a panel involving several amazing women in IT, including Microsoft MD Tracey Fellows.

Wow!! We have a few very exciting plans in the works for this year and I can’t wait to see what else we manage to achieve together this year!! :D
