Installing Reporting Services Using Setup
You can use the SQL Server Installation Wizard to install Reporting Services components. You can use the wizard to install some or all of the components.
Choosing Installation Options
When installing the server components, the Installation Wizard provides options that determine how a report server is installed:
- Install the default configuration instructs Setup to use default values when installing a report server. This option results in a fully deployed report server that is ready to use once setup is complete. Setup does not prompt you to provide virtual directory names, select a SQL server Database Engine instance, or specify other information to complete the installation. Instead, Setup uses the default values that are described in Default Configuration for a Report Server Installation. The default installation option is available only if you are installing a local Database Engine instance and a Reporting Services instance at the same time. If any of the default values are not available, you cannot choose this installation option.
- Install but do not configure the server is used to copy the program files to disk, configure the Report Server Windows service account, and register the report server Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider. This installation option is referred to as a "Files-only" installation. Further configuration is necessary before the report server can be used. The Reporting Services Configuration tool is provided so that you can perform the additional configuration.
To run the Reporting Services Configuration tool, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click Reporting Services Configuration.
Report server installation options are available when you specify Reporting Services on the Components to Install page or Report Server on the Feature Selection page. Note that these options apply only to the installation of the server components. If you are installing the client components (such as Report Designer, Model Designer, or the administration tools), these options have no effect.
Choosing Components to Install
You can install server components by selecting Reporting Services on the Components to Install page. You can install client components by selecting Workstation components, Books Online and development tools on the Components to Install page.
To pick specific components or to install Reporting Services product documentation or samples, click Advanced. Clicking Advanced opens the Feature Selection page, which provides a complete list of components that can be installed individually.
How to Install Specific Components
Reporting Services includes server components and client components for authoring reports and models, and for administering a report server. You can install SQL Server client components that are useful for managing a server installation. For more information about component descriptions, see Selecting Reporting Services Components to Install.

Report server, Reporting Services Configuration tool, SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool, SQL Server Configuration Manager, Report Builder |
Report server is always installed with tools that are used to enable server functionality. There are no options for excluding these tools from your installation. However, if you select Shared Tools in the Feature Components page, you can specify where the tools are installed on the file system.
You cannot remove Report Builder from a server component installation. However, you can disable it after Setup is complete so the tool cannot be run. For more information about how to disable Report Builder, see Role Assignments for Report Builder Access. |
Report Manager |
Report Manager is selected by default when you choose Reporting Services on the Components to Install page. You can install Reporting Services without Report Manager by removing it from the Feature Components page. You can also deploy Report Manager and the report server on separate computers. For more information about how to install Report Manager and report server on separate computers, see Configuring a Report Server for Internet Access. |
Report Designer and Model Designer |
Report Designer and Model Designer are available when you install Business Intelligence Development Studio.
