WSUS 3.0 SP1 is now RTM!!!

Dear WSUS users,

I am very excited to announce the release of WSUS 3.0 SP1, now live and ready for download! This is a significant release that represents a huge milestone for all involved and we thank you greatly for your feedback and support throughout the life cycle of this project.

WSUS 3.0 SP1 can be installed stand-alone or as an in place upgrade to WSUS 2.0 SP1 or WSUS 3.0 RTM.

The improvements that SP1 offers compared to WSUS 3.0 RTM include:

· Support for Windows Server 2008

· Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008

· Enhanced bulk approval capability, preserving existing approvals

· Support for separate proxy servers and ports for SSL and non SSL traffic

· Better performance

· Detailed computer reports that can be imported to Excel

For those of you who are still on WSUS 2.0, a description of the new features in WSUS 3.0 RTM is quite long and can be found in the overview guide.

WSUS 3.0 SP1 is now located at the Microsoft Download Center. It will also be released via Microsoft Update, the Catalog, and WSUS in late March. To download and to obtain installation instructions, please visit the following Microsoft Web site: https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F87B4C5E-4161-48AF-9FF8-A96993C688DF&displaylang=en

Congratulations team and WSUS community on this great milestone, enjoy!

To be honest I am not sure if this is the best way to pose these questions so please forgive my ignorance in advance. How can I control where the automatic updates are downloaded to? It appears that they seem to create a temporary folder on the volume with the largest amount of available capacity. Some of my volumes are special purpose and I do not want the update files even if they are temporary to be created there. Is there a chance that the update files will actually have  the temporary attributes set so that we can identify them as temporary files in the first place? If I tighten the security the update process fails the install with an erro code 0x05. Is there any way I can exclude a volume or volumes from being eligible to be used by the update process? Thank you for your kind attention.

If the SMTP password is long (>= 12 chars), then the upgrade could fail with the above issue. A work-around is to set the SMTP password to be something smaller temporarily, do the upgrade and set to the correct password after upgrade.

Not exactly thrilled with the install.  Before I can run the install it checks for a gig of free space on the C drive.  I'm not even going to install this update there, but it still checks.   If I'm lucky I'll have space cleared for the update today.

Hi, I applied SP1 yesterday and seemed to go just fine, thank you. When will we be able to do automatic approvals based on some more variables? I'd like to be able to auto-appove something like the Malicious Software Removal tool or Root Certificates, but to do that I have to (unless I missed something) allow the entire category of updates it falls under to be auto-approved. Mayday, Mayday!! Cecilia, we need help!!  We just upgraded to WSUS 3.0 SP1 and now we have numerous clients coming to a halt (CPU utilization is pegged at 100%).  This started a day after we upgraded from 2.0 SP1 enterprise wide.  We had to disable the wuauserv system service on all our devices so that we wouldn't have thousands of clients reporting problems.  We are very close to callilng premiere support, but since this is WSUS related, I thought posting here would be prudent.  Please advise.

We have 3.0 RTM using SQL 2005 Express SP2 and use port 8530 (alternate port in setup) for WSUS, Server 2003 R2 Enterprise.  Do I believe documentation for uninstalling what we have first?  Where can I find specific info for upgrading a supported customization of this product so we don't waste an entire day fixing it.  Thank you.

Just a quick heads-up for anyone installing WSUS 3.0 sp1 on a clean build of Windows Server 2008 with only the IIS7 role enabled. The install of WSUS 3.0 sp1 will fail because it tries to configure dynamic content compression which is NOT installed as a role service for IIS7 by default.  Install the dynamic content compression role service for IIS7 and all should be well.

I have a WSUS 3.0 installation using remote SQL.  I understand this is a "manual" upgrade process (MS makes the same statment on their site).  However

I'm after the release notes / fixes that Microsoft provide with any other product's service pack.

Where can we view a list of fixes / updates in SP1?  The release notes on the SP1 download page point to a generic V3.0 page..

Not exactly thrilled with the install.  Before I can run the install it checks for a gig of free space on the C drive.  I'm not even going to install this update there, but it still checks.   If I'm lucky I'll have space cleared for the update today.
