Available now: The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 3.0

Today we are releasing the Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) 3.0, a supported, freely available solution for converting VMware-based virtual machines and virtual disks to Hyper-V-based virtual machines and virtual hard disks (VHDs).

With the latest release, MVMC 3.0 adds the ability to convert a physical computer running Windows Server 2008 or above, or Windows Vista or above to a virtual machine running on a Hyper-V host (P2V).

This new functionality adds to existing features available including:

• Native Windows PowerShell capability that enables scripting and integration into IT automation workflows.
• Conversion and provisioning of Linux-based guest operating systems from VMware hosts to Hyper-V hosts.
• Conversion of offline virtual machines.
• Conversion of virtual machines from VMware vSphere 5.5, VMware vSphere 5.1, and VMware vSphere 4.1 hosts to Hyper-V virtual machines.

    It's too bad MS didn't include the ability to convert a VM from Gen1 to Gen2 in this piece of software.

    Does MS not realize or just not care that a lot of customers still have legacy software running on Server 2003, on old hardware - systems that are prime candidates for p2v? Now that p2v is finally added back to an MS product, all of those customers are still out of luck? Are you guys trying to push people towards another vendor?

    MVMC 3.0 seems to be updated. Can you tell me what was updated? According to the details section in the Download Center web page, the published date is Dec 2nd 2014 though it was released mid Oct this year. Besides, I have the one released in October and I tried to compare files between MVMC 3.0 Dec 2nd version and MVMC 3.0 mid Oct version using comp command. Then there existed certain differences. Even Mvmc.GUI.exe and MvmcCmdlet.dll are different between Dec ver and Oct ver. In addition, there are totally 31 files that are located the default installation folder and are certainly different in file size or in binary order. I would be really really appreciated if Microsoft points out the difference.
