AMD Are looking to extend the X86 chipset to support more parallel capabilities
Looks like AMD ( who are still struggling to keep up with Intel in the chip manufacture process ) are going to fall back to some tried and tested approaches for success, by extending the architecture of the X86 chip set to support more parallel capabilities, and expanding on what they call the "Software Parallelism initiative", designed to optimize programming for multi-core processors.
I think that this is a smart move on behalf of AMD, making investments where they have strength, as in the next 10 years massive multi-core chips will be commonplace and application vendors will need to build their apps to be very thread aware. See past posts (Intel pledges 80 cores in five years and As hot as a Nuclear Reactor) on the subject.
I am pretty excited to see what they announce next week.
