Home Server rockin' Australian IT
Windows Home Server is starting to get noticed by the media (go jeffa!)which is awesome as I reckon it'll have an adoption curve like Media Centre - very slow at first then exponentially growing. I have a soft spot in my heart for home computing and of course being an infrastructure guy I want to consolidate storage, have reliable and fast backups and of course have strong network integrity at home.
There are 3 key features that make this product perfect for me.
1. Remote Access to files
I just love been able to logon remotely to upload/share files and access your home network remotely.
You can upload files from where ever you are and they'll instantly be available on other devices reading off the Home Server, say for instance your XBOX or Media Centre.
2. Management / Backup of user files.
And then to manage the user accounts and computers on your network, access them remotely - even to perform a bare-metal restore.
I feel that I'm not really that different to most technical people that work in IT, in that I'm the default technical support for the neighborhood and home. I reckon this product will make all us home tech support people much happier - I'm almost contemplating opening up a local wireless network to allow my neighbors to back up their data so I can help them better.
3. Balancing of Storage
So you can just keep adding Disks and it balances out the storage across those disks - I have no idea how, I just know that you can keep going to the limit of the various USB/firewire/SAT/IDE connections you have available and Home Server will spread the files across the disks ensuring an expandable disk array so YOU don't have to worry about where files are kept.
Everyone I've showed this to says "I need this now! - where can I get it" - just check with your accredited local system builder or purchase online at eyo - ($236) at the time of writing - Bargain!
big shout out to Keith Holtham for lending me his Homeserver that he spent a good while building for me to nick off with it :)
