I have learned (through the school of hard knocks) that managing one's manager is vital to achieving personal success in the workplace. Here at Microsoft (with armies of managers) the need is pronounced. I have been surprised over the years by how many people do not think about much less have an explicit plan for managing their manager. When discussing it, I have a sort of scripted lesson I give.

Well, I have been out done by SlackerManager. He has a three-part set of blog posts on the secret art of managing one's manager. I recommend it highly.

Second Rock Thought for the Day : One of my sons and I were listening to P.O.D. in the car on the way to his baseball game, and he said, "Pop, this is the loudest song we own." There are some songs I want to hear. But, there are others I want so loud I can almost see the sounds.
