Another post for my ol' Lenovo
Way back in 2006 I received a Lenovo Thinkpad x60 when I first came to the team. It has presented me with some unique challenges over the years, and I have written about it quite often that I would almost appear to think the machine was not worth it. But it keeps working (the old Thinkpads had this reputation) no matter what and frankly, I am impressed with a machine that arrived with Windows XP on it and now solidly runs Windows 8.
This week, though, my hard drive cover broke off the machine:
That is actually the second hard drive in it now, if I remember correctly. I tried to glue the cover back together but could not get it to line up correctly (the lengths I go to in order to help Microsoft lower costs) because a small piece of the plastic is missing.
On the positive side, I have carried it to my regular meetings and used it. So far, no problems and it is still ticking away. 7 years with a single laptop is a pretty good run. It has taken just normal wear and tear and I don't think I have seen any other machine last this long to accumulate this much abuse.
So good job to the engineers that designed this thing. I hope I can get a few more months out of it - I'm going to miss that keyboard!
Questions, comments, concerns and criticisms always welcome,
John

I got seven years out of my T21 until it started freezing up on me. Perhaps it is fixable. Now using an X61 for nigh five years and it is fast as anything around with its SSD, 4GB, and dual core 2.3Ghz proc. (I made the jump to an excellent elitebook at work, though, but I miss the keyboard). They do start to fall apart after a bit. My X61 is missing several pieces of plastic even though it has been carefully looked after if heavily used. That never happened to the IBM machine.Anonymous

Yep, I am not looking forward to life with Chiclet style keyboards. I did not like them in the 80s and I do not like them now. Sigh.
