MERGE Syntax - SQL Server 2008 Transact-SQL Recipes
I received an email about this today (Thanks again Steven) and thought I would put out a brief post on this topic just to share with others...
A couple of months before SQL Server 2008 Transact-SQL Recipes was sent to the printer, pre-RTM, there were a few key syntax changes made to various commands and stored procedure calls/parameters. I spent a couple of days revising my code and then forwarding to the editors. Even though this was a couple of months before printing, and even though I had assurances that my changes would be made, I found that a couple of items from Chapter 2 were not fixed. Specifically, the MERGE command uses the pre-RTM syntax.
To make up for this, Apress made Chapter 2 (in the fixed form) a free downloadable chapter, which you can get on the link below:
Ch. 02 - Perform, Capture, and Track Data Modifications (Corrected Version of Chapter 2)
I found this issue when I received the printed form of my book. I was so excited when it arrived, and then I immediately found they had not corrected this. It was kind of like getting that first scratch or dent on a new car. Anyhow, thought I would call out the chapter and let readers know again. I posted about this on the old blog a few months ago, but it bears repeating.
Thanks for reading!

Say it ain't so, Joe!--to coin a phrase. ;-) <--think of this as an actual wink for a clue to who recently said it...but I digress. Joe, as you know, SQL Server 2008 Transact-SQL Recipes is one of my favorite SQL books. And for what it's worth, the author of another good book--from a different publisher--had the same problem--the same assurances, everything.Anonymous
