Vista Backup Errors and apologies
I've been waiting for a long time to write this.
Last year I posted about the Vista Backup team being available for a Live Meeting and chat with customers. I received a large number of comments to that post with people talking about their backup error messages and whilst some people got their problems fixed - others did not.
For anyone who has been experiencing problems with Backup and Restore in Windows Vista - I apologise - it's not good enough.
The reason I've been waiting to write this is because I've been trying to find the right group to help. At the end of my hunt and after talking to lots of people in Redmond I've got a link. A link to the Backup team's blog where they've been posting fixes or workarounds to the error messages that people have been receiving.
The Backup team also proactively monitor this newsgroup so if you have any problems then this is the best place to get fix:

What about going forward? Well all I can say is that I've been beating the drum about this and quite frankly being a pain for the Windows 7 Backup team and they assure me that the feedback is being heard loud and clear.

Now only if they let users select what to backup, what not to backup...LOL instead of doing a blind backup, then maybe I'll consider using this.Anonymous

Thanks for the link to that blog. I have just fallen foul of the 0x80070002 'System cannot find the file specified' bug in Backup. Googling shows I'm certainly not the only one. It's over a year since Vista was released - can't quite believe that such major problems are still unfixed.Anonymous

Had Error I/O (0X8007045D) and tried various suggestions mentioned. None worked on Dell XPS 410 . Found my answer on Dell Forum. Answer was to (Play with the DVD UDF Format. Put Bland DVD in drive, Then Start-Computer-Right Click DVD Drive- Format-UDF Formats. 2.01 is Vista Default, whicf my computer DVD was set for. I moved it to 2.05, which is supproted by Vista, but may not work with earlier operating systems. I then had my fist successful back-up since I have been trying. Note: Before this I tried to shut system restore but that did not work for me. Hope it helps.Anonymous

It's the Ox8007045D error message again. I have an earlier backup disk an the computer requested the earlier backup, as I seem to have lost the facility from my recovery folder. It was unable to complete the download, giving the above error message as the reason for failure. Any suggestions please? NomiAnonymous

I recently successfully reinstalled Vista on my HP notebook. First, I backed up my data files to three DVDs using the Windows Backup Tool identified by HP. Now one of the three disks will not work. When I try the “advanced restore,” “different computer,” I get an error message (0x81000F2) saying “a valid backup does not exist at the specified location." If I read the disk contents in Windows Explorer, I see one directory “Paul-PC…” and three files (autorun, medial, and restore). Opening up levels of the directory takes me down through thirty-plus subdirectories, each ultimately opening to two or three “BASE” files (file-type WIM). I have tried to find a program that will open the WIM files, and have downloaded something called 7-zip. When I try that, Windows Media Player comes up. Then an error message says a special codec is probably needed to read the files. I believe my data files are still on Disk 2 and I need them. What must I do to get at them?Anonymous
