Vista After Hours in Manchester
I'm just about to catch my train back down south to Reading and I wanted to say how pleased Matt and I were with the event last night at the Trafford Business Center. It's the first of four Vista After Hours events we are running (find out how to register for Vista After Hours) and our combo of Vista, Home Server, Media Center, Xbox 360 and an impromptu Guitar Hero competition certainly captured the crowd's imagination.
One of the questions that came up really struck a chord with Matt and I. It was about the fact that Microsoft doesn't do a very good job of promoting all the fantastic features built in to Vista such as Media Center or SideShow or even Home Server for example. I think consumer is an area that Microsoft is starting to address more and more and I'll certainly be pushing our Product Managers in the UK to get more visibility to these areas. It's one of the reasons why Matt and I do these events.
One of the other things that came up was the ability to record tv on Media Center onto other devices or network shares and Ian just emailed me to let me know about a couple of posts he has made on how to achieve this:
How to use Windows Home Server with Media Center https://thedigitallifestyle.com/cs/forums/thread/2608.aspx
How to integrate Home Sever with Media Center https://thedigitallifestyle.com/cs/blogs/podcast/archive/2007/08/16/the-media-center-show-119-richard-miller.aspx
Thanks for those Ian!

Hi Steve Glad to hear you enjoyed the event - we are getting serious in the consumer area so watch this space for more stuff coming soon. The video we showed at the beginning is not currently available publically... yet. It was originally put together for an internal Microsoft conference (which is where I first saw it) and I knew we just had to show it off. Cheers JamesAnonymous

Well done, James, Matt, Georgina and all who helped - a very worthwhile event. Microsoft really need to get these messages out to the wider public as they are so relevant to it today (phishing filters, parental controls, home server etc). MS need to swallow their pride and take a leaf out of Apple's book and preach the message. Get some viral marketing done and really hit the consumer space. Remember IBM's recent adverts on prime time TV - cringeworthy to the IT literate but got the brand and solutions out to a wider audience. I look forward to more of these events!Anonymous

I attended the Manchester event too, and found it both enjoyable and useful. Good to see MS taking this direct approach with regards the consumer market - encouraging to see. More of the same please! As an aside, is the MS advert that the event opened with available anywhere online? I'd like to show it to a few people. This is perhaps a case in point - MS have created this advert, to open people's eyes to what's available, but it's seemingly not available anywhere (unless I've missed it!)
