Here's some more FAQ's that you might find interesting on the back of my post last week about general licensing FAQ.

Q) Does a Windows Server 2003 licence allow you to switch between 32 and 64 bit platforms (cross platform rights)?

A) It depends on how you bought the Windows 2003 Server licence:

· Windows Server 2003 licences purchased through the OEM channel have cross platform rights, however, Microsoft cannot provide support, product keys or media.

· Windows Server 2003 licences purchased through a volume licensing agreement have cross platform rights. The product key will be found on eOpen/MVLS and you can order the media from a reseller

Q) Does a SQL Server 2005 licence allow you to switch between 32 and 64 bit platforms (cross platform rights)?

A) SQL Server 2005 server licences are offered by platform (32 bit, 64 bit, and IA64). While you should choose the platform that matches your current hardware (in order to obtain the appropriate media), SQL Server licences are not platform-specific. For example, if you currently have a 32-bit server and plan to upgrade the hardware to 64 bit in the future, you can buy a 32-bit SKU today, and later switch to 64 bit without having to buy an extra licence. Q) Can my Small Business Server 2003 CALs access other servers on my network?

A) Yes. An SBS server licence allows for expanded CAL rights.

· An SBS 2003 Standard/Premium Server licence allows your SBS 2003 CALs to access additional Windows Servers on your network.

· An SBS 2003 R2 Standard/Premium Server licence allows your SBS 2003 CALs to access additional Windows, Exchange 2003 and SQL 2005 Workgroup Servers on your network.

Q) What is a Small Business Server 2003 Transition Pack?

A) The Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Transition Pack helps your business grow as your technology needs change by:

1. Converting your Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 licence into standard licences for each of the individual server components, such as Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition and Exchange Server 2003 SP2.

2.  Removing the design constraints of Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2, which include a 75 user or device limit, support for branch offices, and a requirement to keep Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 as the main logon server.

3. Protecting your software investment. Pricing has been designed so that you won't pay any more than if you had bought the individual product components initially.
