Example of a UK site using Silverlight streaming
Take a look at http://www.lovelewisham.tv for an example of Silverlight streaming being used by the London Borough of Lewisham on their website. The thing to bear in mind that the videos being shown here :
a) They are not costing Lewisham any bandwidth at all - the videos are being streamed by us using a worldwide content delivery network. Anyone can stream video like this as long as they have a Live ID account (which is free of course, and if you use hotmail or Live messenger you already have one)
b) There is no Microsoft branding at all. Visitors to the site have no idea that this is hosted by Microsoft
c) The videos stream at a high bitrate and will scale to huge numbers seamlessly (and free of charge)
And that of course sums up the whole point of using Silverlight streaming: it's fast, it's free and it doesn't use our branding.
Good to see it already being used in the real world.....

It's really a shame that it only works in IE. I will of course be writing to ask for an explanation as to why public money has been used to produce an inaccessible site with proprietary technology.Anonymous

James - Silverlight works in IE,Firefox, Safari, and on Windows and Apple. It works on any backend (ie server), so doesn't require Microsoft at the backend. So it's pretty flexible really.Anonymous

Oh and PS I should have added: so there's no reason this won't work cross-browser and cross-platform. If it isn't working then the reason will be nothing to do with Silverlight. I'll follow up and let you know.Anonymous

Sorry James, but no public money was spent to develop this site. Have you tried downloading and installing Silverlight, that's a useful first step on any browser!Anonymous
