IT Camp-Waltham was a HUGE HIT! Recordings of Sessions now available
IT Camp - Systems Management was held on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (ET) in Waltham, MA
Even though the weather and traffic was miserable, the attendance and excitement by the attendees was nothing short of OUTSTANDING!!! We had 3 tracks going all day.
- Track 1: Systems Management
- Track 2: Virtualization
- Track 3: Hands On
We started out the day with with a keynote presentation on “Cloud Computing” for all attendees. The audience was then given the opportunity to chose from about 30 pre-canned presentations that would make up the 6 sessions in three tracks for the morning. The audience was also asked to submit additional ideas for topics for the rest of the day. People placed their topics on the whiteboard in the front of the room. Then at lunch we voted on which sessions we would cover for that day. This allowed the audience to dictate what the topics for the event would be (aka Camp Style). Feedback from the audience on this event was incredible. The audience wants to have more of these events. One per quarter would be great but at the very least, one per half year. They also want to have this type of event in CT and NH (many obviously traveled to get here )
We had 175 people registered and about 158 in attendance. We covered a myriad of topics including System Center, Virtualizing Exchange, Hyper-V, App-V and many, many more. The strongest feedback though was on the hands-on-lab track. Our theme for the day was bring your x64 compatible machine with virtualization technology on board and we will help you get your private cloud built! Many took advantage of this and found it an invaluable leaning opportunity. We started by going into the bios and enabling virtualization, then we loaded Windows Server 2008 R2 in a Boot to VHD configuration. We did have at least one machine that was not compatible but largely everyone got their server up and running. We enabled Hyper-V then created a new domain and created a new Virtual Machine on Hyper-V to be used for SCVMM. During the setup and deployment of the machines, much training was given about the different options with discussion of why we were selecting the options we chose. We did have some difficulties as many did not have SQL Server available (we did not add that to the requirements for the lab oops . However, we did have some evaluation media available which we copied to some USB drives to allow people to finish the install.

The food was good and the late afternoon snacks were a real treat.
I hope to schedule more of these events in the very near future. Please continue to watch my blog
For those that missed it, the takeaway was to download the evals and play with the new software. Then get certified 70-659!
