Darn Gigabit switches...
I had a netgear gs108 (8 port gigabit switch) die on me this evening. Perhaps it is me working from home.. Perhaps it is the high temperatures in Austin this time of year.. Perhaps it is the humidity from Hurricane Dolly. Who knows...
I have patched together the home network enough to get back online, albeit at 100Mbs (which is now sooooo 2400 baud...)
So, I'm looking to buy a new switch for the home network.

Comments appreciated - I need one with 8+ ports (so 12 or 16 is probably best), gigabit with reasonable backplane, and I'm working my house towards buying a half server rack, so I'd like it to be mountable in a standard 19" rack.

Conor, I got a Dell powerconnect 2708 (8port). They have a 2716. Managed ports (web rmon, vlan, aggegation, etc) and PORT MONITORING! Play with warrenty/config to lower price.Anonymous

Also consider a managed 8- or 24-port from HP... very happy with the 1800-8G myself ($130 and $320, respectively). They support jumbo frames and LACP (native link aggregation). -MattAnonymous

Oh, and if you just want to go overboard, the ProCurve 3500yl-24 gives you 100Gb backplane, 10G port options, every feature you can think of... and runs around $2700. :) -Matt
