System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 – Evaluation
Brief Description
System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (VMM) is a comprehensive management solution for the virtualized data center. It enables increased physical server utilization, centralized management of virtual machine infrastructure, and rapid provisioning of new virtual machines by the administrator, delegated administrator, and authorized end users.
Overview
System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (VMM) is a comprehensive management solution for the virtualized data center. It enables increased physical server utilization, centralized management of virtual machine infrastructure, and rapid provisioning of new virtual machines by the administrator, delegated administrator, and authorized end users.
VMM 2008 R2 can manage all the platforms managed by VMM 2008 and adds support for Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V.
Windows Server 2008 R2 includes significant feature improvements to Hyper-V. VMM 2008 R2 leverages these new platform enhancements and extends the feature set of VMM 2008.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host Management
- VMM 2008 R2 creates and manages virtual machines running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V hosts. When you add a host that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 that does not have Hyper-V enabled, VMM 2008 R2 automatically enables the Hyper-V role on the host.
- VMM 2008 R2 supports the following new features of Windows Server 2008 R2:
- Live migration between Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered hosts. With live migration, you can migrate a virtual machine from one node of a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster to another node in the same cluster without any downtime. Because the virtual machine does not experience any downtime, the move is completely transparent to the users that are connected to the virtual machine.
- Network optimization detection during virtual machine placement. VMM 2008 R2 supports both Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) and TCP Chimney, which are Windows Server 2008 R2 features that improve network performance for virtual machines.
- Network adapters that support the VMQ feature are able to create a unique network queue for each virtual network adapter and then connect that queue directly to the virtual machine’s memory. This connection routes packets directly from the hypervisor to the virtual machine, bypassing much of the processing in the virtualization stack.
- Network adapters that support the TCP Chimney feature are able to offload the processing of network traffic from the networking stack. Both of these features increase network performance and reduce CPU utilization.
- Hot addition and removal of virtual hard disks (VHDs). In Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V allows users to add and remove VHDs from a virtual machine while it is running.
Feature Bullet Summary:
- Live migration
- Clustered Shared Volume (CSV) support that enables multiple Highly Available Virtual Machines (HAVM) per LUN.
- Hot add of storage
- Support for VMware vSphere 4 (VMware VI3 feature parity only)
- SAN Migration into and out of clustered hosts
- Processor flexibility
- Network optimization
- Quick storage migration
- Maintenance mode for hosts
- Support for third party cluster file system, Sanbolic Melio FS
- Support for third party storage class resource, Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows
- Expanded support for iSCSI SANs
- Support for VMware port groups for virtual switches
- Support for Virtual Machine permissions assigned in Hyper-V
- Dynamic policy based load balancing

The tool offers the ability to select the particular scenarios for which system configuration data will be collected: General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks, Server Components, Windows Update Services, Exchange Servers and SQL and other Data Stores (MDAC) . Depending on the particular system configuration and the categories selected, Microsoft Product Support Reports might take between 7 to 25 minutes or more to complete the data collection. Please read the readme.txt files for more details about the information collected by each category.
There are two executables, that correspond to each specific OS architecture, 32 or 64 bit. Please make sure to download the version that correspond to your system architecture.
You may install and use an unlimited number of copies of MPSReports solely for the purpose of gathering system information necessary for your support professional to provide you with technical support services requested by you. All other purposes are not supported by Microsoft. Please refer to the EULA for more detailed information regarding your usage rights.
Important Notes
MPSReports require the installation of additional prerequisites in order to be executed, as listed in the System Requirements section.
Although we do our best for the reporting tool to run without making any registry changes or modifications to the operating system or revert back any changes temporarily performed by the scripts or tools used during the collection, we have identified that under some circumstances the Powershell ExecutionPolicy is not reverted back to the default RemoteSigned value used for most Server configurations. This might need to be changed manually for some Server applications to work after running MPSReports. Please read the following technet content for more information and how-to for more information and how-to

Certificate Enrollment Web Services in Windows Server 2008 R2
Brief Description
This paper explains how certificate enrollment Web services work in Windows Server 2008 R2. It also provides deployment guidance for certificate enrollment Web services in new and existing Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) deployments.
Overview
To provide certificate enrollment in a broader set of deployment scenarios, Microsoft developed a new enrollment protocol based on WS-Trust and two new role services in Windows Server 2008 R2 based on this protocol. The new services use HTTP based messaging over a TLS encrypted transport and do not depend solely on Kerberos for authentication. This enables automatic enrollment from Windows 7 clients to be used across forest boundaries and over the web. The two new role services are called Certificate Enrollment Policy Web Service (the policy service) and Certificate Enrollment Web Service (the enrollment service). These Web services, respectively, enable certificate policy retrieval and certificate enrollment over HTTPS. This guide explains the deployment scenarios, requirements, and recommended configurations, and offers step by step procedures to help you install and configure the new role services.

Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office
Brief Description
August 2009 Community Technical Preview (CTP)
This download provides strongly typed part and content classes for use with Open XML documents.
Overview
Open XML is an open ECMA 376 standard and is also approved as the ISO/IEC 29500 standard that defines a set of XML schemas for representing spreadsheets, charts, presentations, and word processing documents. Microsoft Office Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007 all use Open XML as the default file format.
The Open XML file formats are useful for developers because they use an open standard and are based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML.
The Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office is built on top of the System.IO.Packaging API and provides strongly typed part classes to manipulate Open XML documents. The SDK also uses the .NET Framework Language-Integrated Query (LINQ) technology to provide strongly typed object access to the XML content inside the parts of Open XML documents.
The Open XML SDK 2.0 simplifies the task of manipulating Open XML packages and the underlying Open XML schema elements within a package. The Open XML Application Programming Interface (API) encapsulates many common tasks that developers perform on Open XML packages, so you can perform complex operations with just a few lines of code.
Windows Cache Extension 1.0 for PHP 5.2 - Beta
Brief Description
The Windows Cache Extension 1.0 for PHP is a PHP accelerator that is used to significantly increase the speed of PHP code running on Windows Operating System.
Overview
The Windows Cache Extension for PHP is a PHP accelerator that is used to significantly increase the speed of PHP code running on the Windows Operating System. The extension increases PHP performance by:
- Caching the contents of PHP script files in shared memory, which helps to reduce the amount of file system I/O operations that is performed by the PHP engine. This is especially important when the PHP scripts are located on a remote UNC file share.
- Caching the mappings between the relative file paths and corresponding absolute file paths. This reduces the amount of requests to file system when PHP scripts perform any file operations by using relative file paths.
- Caching the compiled PHP opcode in shared memory to avoid the overhead of parsing and compiling the PHP source code for every request.
IMPORTANT: The Windows Cache Extension for PHP can only be used with the non-thread-safe builds of PHP.

This guide provides information to assist in a Volume Activation deployment specifically for the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems in disconnected networks, such as branch offices and high-security zones within a production environment.
Volume Activation provides two models for completing volume activations: Key Management Service (KMS) and Multiple Activation Key (MAK). KMS allows organizations to activate systems within their own network, while MAK activates systems on a one-time basis using Microsoft’s hosted activation services. Customers can use either or both models to activate systems in their disconnected environment. For more information about both activation models, see the Volume Activation Planning Guide at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=155926, the Volume Activation Deployment Guide at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=150083, the Volume Activation Operations Guide at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=150084, and the Volume Activation Technical Reference Guide at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=152550.

Volume Activation Deployment Guide Windows 7
Brief Description
Use this guide to systemically deploy Volume Activation, including establishing a KMS host or using MAK within your environment.
Overview
This guide describes Microsoft® Volume Activation deployment concepts. Volume Activation consists of two technologies—Key Management Service (KMS) and Multiple Activation Key (MAK)—that allow Volume Licensing customers to activate Volume License editions of the Windows® 7 and Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating systems. The Volume Licensing Service Center at https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/ provides more information about Volume Licensing.
When planning to use Volume Activation, an organization must choose KMS, MAK, or any combination of the two.
