Infrastructure Planning and Design
Brief Description
The Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) guides are the next version of Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The guides in this series help clarify and streamline design processes for Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with each guide addressing a unique infrastructure technology or scenario.
Overview
Infrastructure Planning and Design guides share a common structure, including:
- Definition of the technical decision flow through the planning process.
- Listing of decisions to be made and the commonly available options and considerations.
- Relating the decisions and options to the business in terms of cost, complexity, and other characteristics.
- Framing decisions in terms of additional questions to the business to ensure a comprehensive alignment with the appropriate business landscape.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2
Brief Description
This Management Pack includes an extensive set of monitoring including synthetic transactions to effectively monitor Exchange 2007 and report on performance, availability, and reliability of its server roles.
Overview
The Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack is designed to monitor Exchange 2007 key health indicators, collect Exchange component-specific performance counters in one central location, and raise alerts for operator intervention as necessary. By detecting, sending alerts, and automatically responding to critical events, this Management Pack helps indicate, correct, and prevent possible service outages or configuration problems, allowing you to proactively manage Exchange servers and identify issues before they become critical. The Management Pack monitors and provides alerts for automatic notification of events indicating service outages, performance degradation, health monitoring, and centralized management.
Note: This Management Pack requires Operations Manager 2007 R2.
Feature Summary
- A number of synthetic transactions ensure the Exchange servers are available and responding in a timely manner. The synthetic transactions are maintenance-mode aware, so that if the target of a transaction is in maintenance mode, the source will not run the transaction, and not alert unnecessarily.
- This Management Pack includes a Management Pack template that provides a wizard-like interface for configuring synthetic transactions against Outlook Web Access (OWA), Exchange ActiveSync, Web Services, POP3, and IMAP.
- This Management Pack includes a Management Pack template that provides a wizard-like interface for configuring mail flow synthetic transactions between agent-managed Exchange 2007 Mailbox servers.
- This Management Pack provides 30+ reports specific to Exchange 2007 that track availability and performance compared to service level objectives. For the list of reports and for more information about the reports, see the Management Pack Guide.
- All the synthetic transactions in this Management Pack use an Operations Manager 2007 R2 hosting feature for Windows PowerShell technology that provides a performance improvement when running synthetic transactions.
- A significant number of rules and monitors that are not actionable or may be noisy are disabled. Note that many of these rules are still in the Management Pack so that you can enable them if necessary.
- Support for monitoring any number of Exchange organizations using a single Operations Manager 2007 management group.
- Full support for Microsoft clustered configurations. For more details, see the Management Pack Guide.
- Discovery of Exchange 2007 server roles is disabled by default, and no Exchange 2007 monitoring is applied by default. This allows you to discover and monitor your servers gradually, as well as tune the Management Pack as you bring more agent-managed Exchange 2007 servers into the Operations Manager environment.

BizTalk Adapter Pack Migration Tool
Brief Description
The Migration Tool helps developers to migrate their projects which use the non-WCF LOB adapters for BizTalk to use the WCF based equivalents from the BizTalk Adapter Pack 2.0
Overview
The WCF-based adapters shipped with the BizTalk Adapter Pack 2.0 are the recommended solutions to integrate various LOB systems with BizTalk Server. The Adapter Pack consists of LOB adapters for SAP, Siebel, Oracle DB, Oracle EBS, and SQL Server. They are built on the WCF LOB Adapter SDK framework. However these are not the first adapters to be released by Microsoft for integration.
The BizTalk Adapters for Enterprise Applications is a suite of adapters based on the older BizTalk Adapter Framework and was released with BizTalk 2006 and BizTalk 2009. Among others, this suite has adapters for SAP, Siebel, and Oracle DB systems. BizTalk Server has a native SQL adapter.
With the release of BizTalk 2009, all these adapters are deprecated in favour of the WCF-based adapters in the Adapter Pack as the latter set has more features and support more LOB versions. The Adapter Pack is based on a different technology and is not compatible out-of-the-box with the older adapters. For example, an application which used the older SAP adapter will not work directly if you installed the SAP adapter from the Adapter Pack.
The BizTalk Adapter Pack Migration tool aims to help developers get started with the process of migrating projects using older adapters to use WCF-based projects. This tool currently supports migrating SAP, Oracle DB, and SQL adapters. After running the tool you should be able to deploy and run the new project as-is in most simple projects or fix some aspects as per the limitations outlined in the documentation. The package above has a detailed tutorial on how to use the tool.

Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 6 Consumer Solution Accelerator
Brief Description
The Consumer Solution Accelerator for Windows Mobile is designed to help developers see how they can harness the power of Windows Mobile to craft compelling consumer solutions. The Consumer Solution Accelerator consists of a documented sample Visual Studio project as well as documents which detail the creation of the project and how it functions.
Overview
The Consumer Solution Accelerator (“Meeting Assistant”) showcases a mobile consumer application written in Microsoft® Visual C#® and Microsoft Visual C++® using Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008. This .NET Compact Framework 3.5 application assists a user who is travelling to a meeting. The application can:
Display maps and other location data relevant to the user.
Estimate how long it will take to get to the meeting.
Notify other meeting attendees if you are going to be late. The application will interact with the mobile device’s built-in Calendar and Contacts applications, use the device’s GPS receiver (if available), use the device’s SMS capability, and use Microsoft Virtual Earth™ Web services. Application Features and Functionality Starting the Meeting Assistant Application The user launches the application from an appointment’s context menu in the Calendar application, and the application tries to use the location data from the appointment to retrieve location data for the meeting. This location data includes:
Map images
Car parking details If necessary, it is possible to fix or override the meeting location from within the Meeting Assistant application. The application caches the location data to avoid having to re-download it every time the user runs the application. Tracking Progress After the user has launched the application, it will periodically use GPS positional data and Virtual Earth to calculate an estimated time of arrival (ETA) at the meeting location. The application assumes that the user is travelling by car. If the application determines that the user will be late for the meeting, it will offer the user the option to send SMS or e-mail messages to other attendees to inform them of the new ETA. These messages will include the new ETA and, optionally, the user’s current location. The user will also be able to override the ETA calculated by the application. Removing Cached Location Data The application automatically removes cached location data from old meetings. Display Meeting Updates The application can receive specially formatted SMS messages from other meeting attendees, sent by the application running on another device if another attendee is running late.

Security Features in Microsoft Online Services
Brief Description
This white paper describes how the Microsoft concern for security, as defined in the Trustworthy Computing initiative, has driven key features in the design, deployment, and operation of the Microsoft Online Services environment.

The security architecture for the Business Productivity Online Suite embodies the key principles of the company’s Trustworthy Computing Initiative: security created by design, by default, and by deployment. Developed for global enterprises, Microsoft’s multi-faceted security program applies a common set of security policies to manage risk and mitigate threats to customer data. Microsoft seeks to improve security by working to standardize the way it tests, implements, and monitor policies for all of its customers.
