Remove an Application Pool (IIS 7)

If an application pool does not have any applications assigned to it, you can remove the application pool. However, if the application pool has applications assigned to it, you must assign those applications to another application pool before removing the original application pool. Applications cannot run unless they are associated with an application pool.
Important
IIS applications anywhere in a site's directory structure can run in the Default Application Pool if they have the appropriate permissions. If you remove the Default Web Site for security reasons, the Default Application Pool is also removed. Therefore, you must make sure that you have already assigned all applications on your Web server to other application pools.

To remove an application pool
You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by running Appcmd.exe commands in a command-line window, by editing configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.
User Interface
To use the UI
Open IIS Manager. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7).
In the Connections pane, expand the server node and click Application Pools.
On the Application Pools page, select the application pool you want to remove.
In the Actions pane, click Remove and then click Yes.
Command Line
To remove an application pool, use the following syntax:
**appcmd delete apppool /apppool.name:**string
The variable string is the name of the application pool that you want to remove. For example, to remove an application pool named Marketing, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
appcmd delete apppool /apppool.name:Marketing
