Edit a Tracing Rule for Failed Requests (IIS 7)

Change the settings for failed request tracing when you want to change the failure definitions for a rule. Change the settings, also, when you want to collect different information about a failed request, for example, when you want to change the length of response time allowed for a request before it is considered a failed request.

Note

Editing a configuration setting changes the setting at the local level and for any child levels that inherit the setting.

To edit a tracing rule for failed requests

You can perform this procedure by using the user interface (UI), by editing configuration files directly, or by writing WMI scripts.

User Interface

To Use the UI

  1. Open IIS Manager and navigate to the level you want to manage. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7). For information about navigating to locations in the UI, see Navigation in IIS Manager (IIS 7).

  2. In Features View, double-click Failed Request Tracing Rules.

  3. On the Failed Request Tracing Rules page, click the rule that you want to change, and then click Edit in the Actions pane.

  4. In the Specify Content to Trace dialog box, click Next.

  5. Optionally, in the Define Trace Conditions dialog box, do one or more of the following:

    1. Change the Status code(s) for which you want to trace failures in the Status code(s) text box.

    2. Change the Time taken (in seconds) and type the time interval in the Time taken (in seconds) text box.

    3. Change the Event severity by selecting a new severity from the Event severity drop-down list, and then click Next.

  6. Optionally, in the Select Trace Providers dialog box, do one or more of the following to change the provider:

    1. Click ASP if you want to configure IIS to trace ASP requests.

    2. Click ASPNET if you want to configure IIS to trace ASP.NET requests.

    3. Click WWW Server if you want to configure IIS to trace WWW Server requests.

    4. Click ISAPI Extension if you want to configure IIS to trace ISAPI requests.

  7. Optionally, click a provider to change its verbosity level.

  8. Under Provider Properties, click a verbosity level in the Verbosity drop-down list.

  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for each provider you selected in the Select Trace Providers dialog box and for which you want to change the verbosity level.

  10. Optionally, click a provider to change the areas you want it to trace.

  11. Under Areas, select the areas you want the provider to trace.

  12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for each provider you selected in the Select Trace Providers dialog box and for which you want to change the areas the provider will trace.

  13. Click Finish.

Note

You must specify at least one trace provider for the Finish button to be enabled.
