System-state diagram conventions

• The shaded boxes represent situations in which Emergency Management Services features are fully or partially available.

• The dashed lines represent transitions into distress or failure states. The operating system might not be able to recover unless assisted. You can use Emergency Management Services to attempt remote recovery if the system is at least partially functioning.

• The ability to manage the system remotely, which is represented by the non-shaded boxes, varies by system. Consult your system documentation to determine whether your system includes features, such as firmware redirection or a service processor, that can affect your ability to manage the system remotely.

• The solid lines represent normal or expected behavior. In these situations, you would expect the computer to turn on, initialize system firmware, and start the operating system without problems.

• The numbers are a sequential representation of the system states.
