VPN servers and Microsoft ISA Server

Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server can be installed on a virtual private network (VPN) server running Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; or Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, and provides the capabilities of both the Windows Server 2003 Routing and Remote Access service and the ISA Server.

When ISA Server is installed, all of the packet filters that are configured on the VPN server are ignored by ISA. ISA creates its own packet filters when it is configured to allow VPN connections. After ISA is installed, use ISA Administrator, instead of Routing and Remote Access, to configure additional filters.

ISA Server includes two wizards that you can use to connect two ISA server computers with a router-to-router VPN connection:

  • Local ISA VPN Wizard

This wizard is used to create a .vpc (VPN configuration) file.

  • Remote ISA VPN Wizard

This wizard is used to read the .vpc file. After the servers have been configured, both ISA servers can initiate and accept VPN connections.

For more information about ISA Server packet filtering capabilities and support for VPNs, see Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server online Help.
