Network Device Receiver Scenarios
This section describes two examples of real-world scenarios that illustrate how to use PlayReady-ND receiver features.
In-Home Digital Media Scenario
PlayReady for network devices lets home users stream protected audio and video from a PlayReady-ND enabled transmitter device to tablets, phones, and other portable devices. For example, a Windows Surface tablet with PlayReady-ND can discover a digital media server that is enabled as a PlayReady-ND transmitter. After authentication and proximity detection (to ensure the user is within range of the transmitter), the receiver app can stream PlayReady protected content (such as purchased movies or DVRed content) from the network share and play it back using the PlayReady-ND enabled Windows Store app.
Live Television Scenario
A TV provider can provide a set top box (STB) with PlayReady-ND transmitter functionality. Once the STB is added to a home network, the TV provider's Windows Store app, which is PlayReady-ND receiver-enabled, can discover available TV channels on the STB through Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). After authentication and proximity detection (to ensure that the user is close enough to the transmitter), the receiver app can pass URLs to tell the STB which TV channel to stream. All channels are encrypted and streamed for consumption on the receiving PC, phone, or tablet. Also, this scenario can support license rotation for in-stream policy changes, such as changing from copy freely to copy once content. In addition, it can support license expiration scenarios, which are often required for copy-never content (such as video on demand).
