Qty. to Ship Field, Sales Line Table

Specifies how many units of the item are to be shipped when the sales order is posted.

When you post from the sales order or change the Quantity field, the Qty. to Ship field is updated to show the difference between the Quantity and the Quantity Shipped fields. Accordingly, the field always contains the quantity that remains to be shipped.

Warehouse Handling

Shipments are automatically created when you post but only if the order contains at least one line where the Qty. to Ship field contains a value that is greater than zero. This guarantees that no shipments are created for sales orders where nothing remains to be shipped.

If the location of the sales order line has been set up to require shipment processing, then you cannot change the contents of the Qty. to Ship field because the shipment flow is defined by warehouse pick routines. This also applies to the Bin Code field on the sales order line. For more information, see How to: Pick Items with Warehouse Picks.

For all location configurations other than directed put-away and pick, the Bin Code field is editable. The value is copied to the inventory pick document to enable sales order processors to define the bin from where the sold item must be picked. For more information, see the Bin Code field on sales order lines.

Assemble to Order

When you enter a value in the Quantity to Assemble field on a sales order line, then a linked assembly order is created to supply the quantity before shipment. For more information, see How to: Sell Items Assembled to Order.

If the full sales line quantity must be assembled to order and shipped, then the value in the Qty. to Ship field is copied to Quantity to Assemble field on the linked assembly order every time that the field is updated. This guarantees that the quantity being shipped is fully supplied by the assemble-to-order quantity.

However, a default value is inserted in the Quantity to Assemble field when the following conditions are true in combination scenarios:

  • Part of the sales line quantity is already available and must be picked from inventory.

  • Only the remaining part of the sales line quantity must be assembled to order.

This default value is calculated from the Qty. to Ship field according a predefined rule that guarantees shipment of assemble-to-order quantities first. You can only change it according to predefined rules. For more information, see the Combination Scenarios section in Assemble to Order or Assemble to Stock.

For more information about combining assemble-to-order and inventory quantities on one sales order line, see How to: Sell Inventory Quantities in Assemble-to-Order Flows.
