3.3.5.5 Receiving a Root Referral Request or Link Referral Request

Root referral requests and link referral requests MUST be handled as specified in section 3.2.5.5, with the following exception: a DC MUST process root referral requests and link referral requests for domain-based DFS namespaces in the domain for which it is a DC. The name of the DFS namespace in the second component of the DFS root referral request path MUST be validated against the domain-based DFS namespaces in the domain of the DC and if the namespace does not exist, the DFS server SHOULD fail the root referral request with a STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE (0xC000000F) return code.<46> This MUST be done by searching the name attribute in the objects under the DFS configuration container of the directory service. A DC MUST fail the link referral request with STATUS_NOT_FOUND, if it’s not the DFS root target for the DFS namespace specified in the link referral request.
