La clase XPathNavigator proporciona un conjunto de métodos que se utilizan para interactuar con los datos de XPathDocument. Puede suplementar las funciones XPath estándar implementando funciones y variables de extensión para utilizarlas en las expresiones de consulta XPath. El método SetContext puede aceptar un contexto definido por el usuario derivado de XsltContext. Las funciones definidas por el usuario las resuelve el contexto personalizado.
Las funciones y variables de extensión pueden ser útiles en la prevención de ataques de inyección de XML. En estos escenarios, los datos proporcionados por el usuario se asignan a variables personalizadas y se procesan mediante funciones de extensión, no como datos sin procesar concatenados con instrucciones de procesamiento. Las funciones y variables de extensión contienen los datos proporcionados por el usuario de manera que estos solo actúan sobre los datos XML de la forma que pretendía el diseñador.
Para usar las extensiones, se implementa una clase XsltContext personalizada junto con las interfaces IXsltContextFunction y IXsltContextVariable que admiten las funciones y variables de extensión. Una XPathExpression agrega datos proporcionados por el usuario con su XsltArgumentList al XsltContext personalizado.
