What's Hot: Hypervisor Running on Bare Metal

If Hypervisor, running on bare metal, makes you uncomfortable, be glad you did not attend our Live Meeting on application and hardware virutalization a few weeks ago, led by presenter Allen Stuart, MCA. You can now find the recording on the MCP home page (see recent live meetings on the right side of the page). I owe some of you some follow up; I could make up answers for you but think it is prudent to wait to hear back from Allen.

In the meantime, I know there is interest out there in a certification specific to virtualization, as written by one gentleman: Is MS planning on creating a MCP certification for MS VS 2005 R2? Having worked extensively with the product it would be a benefit for me to have a professional credential that proves my experience. I think that a cert showing understanding of MS Virtual Server AND the way that virtual server applications abstract the physical server would be an excellent cert now that virtualization is becoming so prevalent.

As the plans stand now, virutalization will be covered in the Windows Server "Longhorn" Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) series certifications rather than being broken out separately. These are still a long way out, so things can change. Your thoughts?

    With Longhorn tests so far out, I think a MCITP for Virtualization would be great.

    ? What are you saying that Longhorn (server) exams are out now?  To my knowledge only the MCTS for Vista is out, the MCITP for Vista (both consumer & enterprise) are still in beta. As for integrating virtualization with the MCTS Longhorn, I don't believe this should happen as Virtual Server is a separate product.  However I don't see the problem including it in the MCITP for Longhorn.  Or maybe as it's already been suggested a separate cert for virtualization at MCTS level? -ken

    I think there is tremendous value in creating a virtualization-centric certification. Employers don't necessarily connect LH certification with virtualization expertise, and really, how much of that exam can be targeted on virtualization to make the credential creditable with regards to virtualization? I think it has to be done, especially for enterprises and data centers where you want to compete with VMWare.

    My thoughts on the matter: Keep Hypervisor related exam contents in the Longhorn certification exams, but break out and create a new MCTS test for MS Virtual Server 2005 R2. Make the Hypervisor related items a MCITP test that "upgrades" the MCTS certification. Win/Win!

    To clarify, the only Longhorn exams that will be out in two months are the betas for the upgrade exams. So, those exams won't be live for another 6-8 weeks or so after the betas; then the rest of the exams will be available one or two months after Longhorn releases to manufacturing... which is not until the last quarter of calendar year 2007, sometime.
