Host Header Named Site Collections in SP2010
Working with a customer yesterday, they were perplexed because they couldn’t figure out how to create HH named site collections in SP2010. They had done this routinely in SP2007. They were somewhat relieved when I told them that it is still possible to do but that they had to use PowerShell to do it and I gave them this link and we did it together. Yep, HH creation is not available in the GUI.
Just another reason to begin using PowerShell, there is a wealth of capability there.
I taught a SharePoint 2010 PowerShell course in 4 different cities earlier this year and many attendees were amazed at the flexibility and capability, beyond what is available in the GUI. Especially since many features, eg., multitenancy, can only be enabled via PowerShell.
So what are you waiting for…

hi steve, thanks for sharing. I had my SP 2010 site hosted at ASPHostCentral (http://www.asphostcentral.com). I initially had a problem like the one your client experienced. After reading through the solutions you provided, all works now. Thanks heaps!Anonymous

We have host header site collection in a web app in sharepoint 2010 and when we do redeployment of wsp, nothing gets updated but suprising thing is root site collection which is not host header site collection inside same web app gets updated master page/ page layouts. I tried to activate/deactivate feature but nothing getting updated and I can not delete existing page layouts/ master page as they are being used by number of pages and that is not the solution I am looking for. Can anybody guide on how to deploy wsp in host header site collection in sharepoint 2010/ amitloh@gmail.com
