A quick way to get context for a message in your inbox
I manage my to-do list partly with tasks, and partly
with mail. I am a "filer": as I receive email, I act on it immediately (read,
respond, forward, file, etc) or I leave it in my inbox until I have time to address
it.
One thing I find myself doing a lot is waiting to hear
back from someone else on an issue. If they don't respond within a certain amount
of time, I often want to remind them that I'm waiting for a response. So here's the
way I do that:
1. Select a message
2. Right click on it
3. Find All | Related Messages (This does a
search in the inbox, drafts and sent items for messages from that thread)
4. Find the most recent message in my sent items, and reply to it again
A side benefit of this is that it helps provide a record
of my action - if someone isn't responsive over time, I can show their manager how
I've been contacting them once a week for the last two months. Fortunately that doesn't
happen often : -)
