Outlook 2003 and the OAB

Outlook 2003 introduced a number of improvements and the most relevant (in my opinion) it the new Cached Mode. This allows the client to show you a cached copy of your mailbox as a background process updates the information. The result is a better user experience, since you see the piece of new mail in your inbox only after it is downloaded.

The Offline Address Book, however, poses a little bit of a challange. Since that is a big blob of data, it may take a while to download, specially in large companies where the directory is huge.

I was asked about how the OAB works and also how to configure it using the Send/Receive settings in Outlook while on the new Cached mode. That's when I decided to do a little bit of research:

Este recurso permite que o Outlook mostre uma cópia local da sua caixa postal, enquanto outro processo atualiza os e-mails em paralelo. O resultado é uma melhoria na percepção do usuário, já que ele só vê um e-mail depois que foi baixado.

Entretanto, o “Livro de Endereços Offline“ (conhecido pela sigla em inglês: OAB) torna-se um desafio. Já que ele é um grande bloco de dados, pode demorar para baixar, particularmente em grandes empresas com muitos funcionários.

Eu recebi uma pergunta sobre como o OAB funciona e como usar a configuração de “Enviar/Receber“ no novo “ Modo de Transferência em Cache“ para configurá-lo. Decidi então pesquisar o assunto:

Here are my conclusions:

In cached mode, the OAB will be updated, but it is the last thing to be downloaded (after all message folders are up to date).
You can limit the frequency the OAB gets updated on the server side (default is 24 hours).
After the initial synch by Outlook 2003, only the difference (new or updated entries) in the OAB is downloaded.
When the Outlook 2003 is in Header mode, the OAB is not updated (requires Exchange Server 2003).
You can configure Outlook 2003 to go into Header mode in slow connections (requires Exchange Server 2003).
OAB configuration for Cached Mode cannot be controlled from the Send/Receive settings. Automatic OAB downloads are controlled via registry keys or group policy (User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesMicrosoft Office Outlook 2003Cached Exchange Mode).

I hope this clears this subject a bit.

Estas são as minhas conclusões:

No “Modo de Transferência em Cache“ , o OAB será atualizado, mas é a última coisa a ser baixada (depois de todas as pastas de mensagem serem atualizadas).
Você pode limitar a frequência com que o OAB é atulizado no lado do servidor (o default é 24 horas).
Depois da sincronização inicial do Outlook 2003, somente as diferenças (itens novos ou atualizados) no OAB são baixadas.
Quando o Outlook 2003 está em “Modo de Cabeçalho“, o OAB não é atualizado (requer Exchange Server 2003).
Você pode configurar o Outlook 2003 para usar o “Modo de Cabeçalho“ em conexões lentas (requer Exchange Server 2003).
A configuração do OAB em “Modo de Transferência em Cache“ não pode ser controlada pelas opções de “Enviar/Receber“. Esta configuração são contraladas pelo Registro ou por uma Diretiva de Grupo (Group Policy) (User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesMicrosoft Office Outlook 2003Cached Exchange Mode).
