Exchange Server 2007 in Depth (Part 6 of 8) Questions and Answers (01-30-08):

Question: I'm planning on doing the new MCTS for Exchange bootcamp next month. I don't have any background with Exchange, I've been attending this series, watching the on demand series 24hrs of Exchange and plan on doing the ondemand Labcast would you suggest anything else for prep? Also why are the ondemand webcast so low res compared to the live webcast?

Answer: In addition to all that you mentioned, you really should get your hands on the evaluation copy of Exchange 2007 and install it in a lab environment (using VPC2007SP1 is probably easiest). This wil allow you to get more hands on experience with different aspects as you go along. You should also get more familiar with the PowerShell in general.

Question: I know this is off topic, but does the 32-bit "test" version of Exchange 2007 allow us to test CCR clustering?

Answer: Yes it does. I know because I have actually set this up in my Virtual Lab before.

Question: Does Exchange 2007 support NLB ?

Answer: For the Client Access Server Role, Yes.

Question: Can you set the Replication interval on the LCR? Does LCR support SAN storage ?

Answer: No, you cannot set the replication interval time for LCS. Yes, LCR supports SAN storage. You can use any storage that Exchange 2007 can “see”.

Question: With CCR are you able to have multiple Mail stores on different servers CCR to a single server?

Answer: With CCR, you can only have a 1:1 relationship. This means one Active paired with one Passive in the CCR. However, with Standby Continuous Replication (SCR) in Exchange Server 2007, you can have different Storage Groups from different source servers using the same Target server for the standby server.

Question: Harold in a CCR deployment, do we still need to use the cluster administrator to manage the cluster?

Answer: There is very little that needs to be managed from Cluadmin. Once you setup CCR, you use Exchange Management Console or Exchange Management Shell to manage the CCR “stuff”.

Question: can you combine LCR and SCr technologies ?

Answer: Yes, you can. You can also combine CCR and SCR.

Question: Hi Harold Can you use both LCR and CCR at the same time?

Answer: Yes, you can as I also stated in the previous answer.

Question: can you keep additional copies of the logs in the event that your most recent log was/is corrupt?

Answer: Unless you have enabled circular logging, the Log files are not deleted until you perform a full backup. At that point, you don’t need the log files anymore for the copy of the database that was backed up. Is this what you are asking?

Question: what are you doing in Buffalo NY?

Answer: I delivered a TechNet Event in Syracuse, NY yesterday and have one in Buffalo, NY tomorrow.

Question: When Exchange 2007 SP1 Webcast will be kicked in? I like to learn more about SCR!

Answer: I honestly don’t know when we’ll do an Exchange 2007 SP1 webcast.

Question: How often are log files created by default and what is the retention period for the log files?

Answer: Exchange 2007 creates log files as needed. These log files are 1 MB in size and when it “fills up”, Exchange will close it and create another one. If you don’t have circular logging enabled, they are kept until you perform a full backup or if you manually delete them.

Question: Harold, I asked this question before but I cannot find how to change it. At what percentage the Exchange 2007 server will send the alert notification when the mailbox size is near limitation, 80 or 85%? If it is configurable, where/how to change of this alert setting? Thanks.

Answer: I don’t believe it will send any alerts unless you specify when to do so.

Question: Please publish how to move all users from Sea-Exc-01 to Sea-DC-01 via SCR. Thank you

Answer: For my demo environment, to move all the users that were homed on SEA-EXC-01\SG2\MBX2, I would have issued the following command from the Exchange Management Shell:

Get-Mailbox –Database SEA-EXC-01\SG2\MBX2 | Move-Mailbox –ConfigurationOnly –TargetDatabase SEA-DC-01\SG2Port\MBX2Port

  1. Dave, the Q&A Log from the webcast is part of the blog.
  2. For Storage Groups, we do recommend one database per SG, but I wouldn't say that there is one "best" way to do it.  Different companies will organize based on location or types of users or how they plan to establish the LCR / SCR partnership and so forth.  Not sure if this is what you are looking for though.     C. Estrada: The issue isn't the distance, but more the latency and available bandwidth between the two locations.  Keep in mind that you are copying 1 MB log files from the Active node to Passive node (CCR) or Source to Target (SCR). Peri: You would need to modify the settings associated with the Storage Group and Database.  This can be done using the move-databasepath and move-storagegrouppath CMDLETs.  I assume you are wanting to setup LCR and not LLC.  LCR can be established from the GUI (EMC) by right clicking the appropriate Storage Group and choose to enable Storage Group Copy.     If you have a customer with 180K user mail boxes (on Exchange 07) and they need to replicate mailbox data more than 2500 miles--using SCR and CCR, are they any risks w/ this replication approach?  Would you reccomend another alternate solution for the replication piece, when data needs to travel more than 2500 miles?  What parameters/guidance would you give the customer for who wants ansychronous replication needs?
