Best place to discuss Windows 8
I wanted to offer a pointer to the best place to have discussions about Windows 8. Please head over to the forums we have set up to discuss the product and answer questions. As we have seen, the commenting mechanism is not a great place to have a wide variety of topics different than the topic of the post while keeping track of the discussion. We set up this short URL to be easy to remember: https://win8.ms/forums gets you to the general forum.

How do I shut down the machine? How to enable old start menu? No such setting. This is the most confusing build I have ever used. 10y+ of PC historyAnonymous
September 13, 2011
These are my first considerations: (++) "how-can-it-be-so-fast" boot times (+) the overall UI response is very quick (+/-) the bootloader has removed my Windows XP boot option, I had to resume it using BCDEDIT (-) why no mouse touch features like scrolling the new start page? (--) I have to logoff to shutdown? (--) I'm already missing the standard Start menu, where I can hide seldom used programs.Anonymous

@Sam HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurre ntVersionExplorer change value of RPEnabled from "1" to "0" than you can enable the old starmenu But i don't recommend that, because the Ribbon will be also deactivated. I hope in the final release this will be fixed.Anonymous

anyone looking for a shutdown / restart option, do the following:
- press the WinLogo key on keyboard or take mouse to lower right corner of screen
- the new windows Start menu will show up
- select settings, a bar will slid in from left side of screen, there at the bottom, power options :) to quickly search for files and apps, like you previously do Win7 start menu:
- on the home screen, just start typing name of file or app you are looking for.
- Win8 will show up results as you type. // chall3ng3r //

When using a mouse I think it would be more intuitive if the screens scrolled automatically when moving pointer to the right or the left side of the screen. It would also make it more aesthetically pleasing rather then having the scroll bar floating right in the middle. Perhaps make it an optional feature where you could also change the scrolling rate when moving the pointer.Anonymous

@Steven Sinofsky The new UI is wonderfull. But it isn't user-friendly if you have a Desktop or a laptop. Some users, like me, will never buy a touchscreen or a tablet. We prefer mouse and keyboard. We prefer windows, taskbar, start menu where you can get programs, files, etc... Maybe, introducing an option that makes you choice what UI you want to use, would be important. So, if you have a pc desktop and you don't want to use Immersive, you can use the desktop. And if you want to use Immersive (if you have a tablet, but also if you have a desktop and you want to use Immersive), you can use it. Simple. And, why not? A user wants to use them together? Why shouldn't he do this? One last thing: I watched a video (Jensen Harris) and i saw that to get Immersive from the desktop you must click Start on the right. I think it could disturb. I don't now, maybe "Start Screen" in the menu start near Help and Support. This is only an example. I'm Italian, and in Italian blogs 80% of people say they're disappointed because they hate Immersive (and the new start menu, too) on a pc. I'd like an answer. Users' opinion is important ;)Anonymous

I have been using the developer build for about 10 hours now and have noticed a couple of things. First off file transfer from IDE to SATA and from SATA to SATA seems to be about the same speed even though my SATA drives are 7200RPM drives and my IDE is only 5400RPM. I have also run into an issue with explorer in that I chose to sort by file type and it has taken over 25 minutes so far to reorder the list and still hasn't completed it. It is like the OS can no longer see the drives as being there. I closed out all windows and went back in to try again and now it doesn't even see the drives in explorer.Anonymous

Is keeping the kernel hibernated at shut down a good idea ? couldn't that affect the user experience after a long time using Windows ? Could anyone please inform me about how to install drivers without re-installing windows= I installed it through virtualbox, everything went fine, but now I assume that I need to install the drivers through the .iso file for windows 8. When I try to open the .iso it says that I need at least 20gb free memory and I only chose 20gb while installing it.. So my question is, can I download the drivers from somewhere else? Do I need to re-install it? With the drivers I mean those that enables me to use internet etc..Anonymous

Between the X32 version and the X64 version are many differences. Why so? Many apps are missing like the mail app, the music player app, or the video app. The right menu feature is missing too. Why does it has to be differences between 32 bits and 64 bits version?Anonymous
September 19, 2011
THere have to be a 32 and 62 bits vision and there will be many differences, this is because 32 bits version is for pc with less power ie: less that 2 gigs of ram, less than 2 gigahertz CPU. in 32 bit apps use less processing power , so they run smoothly on the slower pc, or tablet. While in 64 bits software or apps can use up to 2 gigi in doing 1 process and a slower pc's will lag to run these programs.Anonymous

I think its important to keep ALL the functionality that the Windows 7 desktop brought to the table. People are complaining about the "start button" and the functionality it provides (taking you back to the start screen). While I understand you wanting to bring the Charms to that area for consistentce, perhaps you should just lead with search in the lower left coner instead of start? This way when a desktop user clicks the lower left you instantly get something more alined with what happened before, which is a list of all your programs/apps and a way to filter them and NOT the Start Screen. Having said that, you can still do the hover thing to get the rest of the options, as well as pull the Charms up by the right hand side menu to navigate other places in the system, but the lower left hand coner should lead with Search and not Start. Also, all the taskbar stuff from Windows 7 should make its way over to 8 as well...dont limit production in the name of keeping people going back to the start screen all day. Let users choose...if we want the start screen and its applications then we will live in the start screen...if we want to live on the desktop, let us...ONLY upon clicking on the Windows key should we see the start screen but try and limit forcing people to do so. Having a Start button in the lower left coner of the desktop does this, because all the desktop users want to see in the mode is a replacement for the start button which is SEARCH and not Start.Anonymous
September 19, 2011
Give the option to users on what button they want by default in the lower left coner (Start or Search).Anonymous

I would like to bring up groups and the options you give end users in relation to them. What im thinking about is Xbox 360 groups and how the 'home group" is the first thing your Xbox 360 goes to upon boot up but its actually the second group on the list after Bing. binarysauce.files.wordpress.com/.../new-xbox-360-dashboard.png What im hoping is that you give end users the same option in that you allow you to set the group Windows 8 loads to on the start screen so that we may have Win8 launch to the Home group (example) while we have another group to the left of it...say Social group for quick access.Anonymous

Microsoft, my advice would be to focus on both Education and Business needs for a successful Windows 8 product. Specifically the methods of the creation of content. If you consider an operating system for touch sensitive devices; the methods of putting pen to paper so to speak are not handled well in your competition. Further, if you also consider Office and Office 365, having applications that support inking would be a mandatory minimum! Onenote people. You already own it. Build a web platform around SharePoint and Onenote for schools and businesses. Garry Clum Jr Director of Technology St. Paul Academy and Summit SchoolAnonymous

Also it would be good to include in a click and hold and drag on the Start Menu so you don't have to use the slider on the bottom.Anonymous

windows 8 Dev Pre has doesn't satisfied me too much because Microsoft has only done few changes to WIN 7 do develop windows 8 . Meanwhile a large change in features improvement was seen at the time only when Microsoft windows moved from xp to vista . then Microsoft has done poor works just developed WIN 7 with few features improvement only because vista has failed gaining popularity on pcs . Now same *** for windows 8 Microsoft should take a look at apple and their improvements for Mac OS X. take look at here is an application program made my Samsung www.samsung.com/.../pcsw which does same work as a macs airdrop does en.wikipedia.org/.../AirDrop_%28OS_X%29 So Microsoft should take the copyright`s or source code or logic behind the useful apps made by their partner O E M like HP ,DELL , Samsung, Acer , and much more and invent them to windows 8 . then windows may have great value and popularity over Mac or Linux bhilare_kaustubha@rediffmail.com
