Media Center guide download error code 13

I have been getting several comments in blog posts and emails from customers who have been running into error code 13 while trying to download television guide data in Media Center. Unfortunately, there appear to be a lot of cases of this error and we have not been able to identify fixes or workarounds for all of them. I wanted to create one single post where I list all of the suggested workarounds we currently have.

What is error code 13?

First, a brief description of error code 13. According to the list of possible guide download error codes I previously posted, this error means "Failure attempting to download new Guide data. Please ensure that you are connected to the Internet. If you connect through a LAN, ensure that your proxy or firewall has been properly configured."

What can I try to do if I receive error code 13 during Media Center guide download?

Based on the cases we have seen so far, this error is generally a proxy server configuration issue that is preventing Media Center or the computer from communicating on the internet. The following suggestions may help resolve this issue:

  1. Media Center guide download will only work if your computer's system clock is correctly synchronized to the current internet time. Make sure that your system clock is set to the correct time and time zone for the region you are located in. Note also that if you do not have the box checked to automatically adjust the time for daylight savings time changes, you may have to manually adjust your clock to account for this.
  2. Sometimes, there are XML parsing problems caused by previously downloaded guide data. You can attempt to workaround this type of problem by renaming the directory %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG (I suggest renaming rather than deleting in case you want to revert back to the previous data later on). Then open Media Center, go to Settings, then TV, then Guide, then Set up Guide Listings and configure guide download one more time to regenerate this folder and (hopefully) the contents
  3. Media Center guide download functionality is located in the binary file %windir%\ehome\ehSched.exe. If you have firewall hardware or software on your system, you need to make sure that this executable has outgoing internet privileges.
  4. Media Center guide download uses SSL and the HTTPS protocol. This protocol requires the ability to access the internet on port 443. In addition, the guide download communicates in some instances via the standard HTTP port - 80. You may need to configure your firewall to allow internet communication on ports 80 and 443 if you have them locked down otherwise.
  5. Launch Media Center, choose Settings, then General, then Media Center Setup and choose to not use the guide. Then restart the machine, relaunch Media Center and run Media Center setup again and choose to use the guide again
  6. Re-register the Media Center guide DLL by clicking on the Start menu, choosing Run, typing cmd and then running the command line %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\regasm.exe %windir%\ehome\ehepgdat.dll
  7. Temporarily disable any anti-virus, anti-spyware or firewall software that you have installed on your system, then launch Media Center and try to download guide data again
  8. Uninstall McAfee Privacy Service if you have it installed
  9. If you are using a SonicWALL hardware firewall, you may have to manually configure it to allow HTTP byte range requests. See this blog post for instructions to do this.
  10. If you are using a download manager application that overrides default system download functionality (such as BitComet or FlashGet), they may interfere with Media Center guide data download functionality. In some cases, it helps to close or disable this type of software, then launch Media Center and try to download guide data again

What if none of the above work?

Unfortunately, this list of suggestions is all that I currently know of to try to troubleshoot this type of failure. If you have tried all of the above and are still not able to download guide data, then I suggest posting a question at one of the following locations and hopefully someone there can help suggest some additional ideas:

<update date="1/7/2008"> Added information about download manager software and added links to the public newsgroup and forums </update>

I believe I have traced the problem down to network connectivity from ISP's I have bell south her in Florida and they are horrendous when it comes to connectivity issues. If I use my dell media center PC with a bell south dial up, I can connect to the program guild and download info no problem. But if I use my DSL connection I get errors. I have notivced in my sonicwall firewalls logs that the possible reason for this is the site is un reachable from my network See: log output below

    02/10/2006 13:42:33.720 ICMP packet dropped 192.168.0.1, 8, WAN 72.149.48.175, 0, WAN, adsl-072-149-048-175.sip.bct.bellsouth.net ICMP Type: 8, Code: 0

The destination address that media center is trying to connect with is apparently at 72.149.48.175 and it uses certain ports to communicate. But this address is not reachable on some ISP's systems. I can reach it on my SBC DSL just fine, and on bell south dial up just fine. But not on bell south DSL. It definitely appears to have something to do with the way the D-slams or routers at certain service providers are configured.

    Aaron,
As I mentioned on your other BLOG I'm signing up for future updates on this issue.  Tried all of the above, plus all of Dell's suggestions - I still get an error code 13.
    Thanks, Buck.

    Aaron,
Just put this same message on your othere BLOG - I believe I've found the issue.  I've got my system hooked up here at work and the guide downloaded in under 2 minutes.  It appears that my connection through Direcway is the problem.  Is there a fix?  Is it possible to download updates to a thumb drive at work and install on my home machine?  Direcway does mention that VPN connections will not work through their system - is this part of the issue?
Is there anything else I can do to help nail this problem down?  Is it possible that updates will work now that I've gotten my first guide download?
    Regards, Buck
PS I'll just look for updates on this particular BLOG from now on as it is set up for the error code 13 specifically.

Direcway's web accellerator  is DEFINATELY a problem.  I have Direcway myself, and MC was working fine until sometime in Oct. or Nov.  It was sporradic for a while, but then it just quit loading the guide completely.

This weekend, I decided to try to "work around" Direcway.  So, I found a public Proxy (which didn't use port 80) and the guide was retrieved successfully.

Unfortunately, the Direcway accelleration is a big help when browsing the rest of the web, so I can't stick with the other proxy.

Just thought others might like this little tidbit, and maybe if enough of us whine to Direcway, they'll fix it...

I had this error and after much frustration and hair pulling I found a resolution.

    Problem:
    1. DRM file was corrupted.  Not sure if this also corrupted the Guide data, but it did take out Napster.
    2. Couldn't synchronize time using the clock utility.

    Possible Resolution:

I used the napster program to fix both the DRM program, and synchronize the clock to internet time.

I'm not sure which fix enabled the guide to work again but this did the trick.

If you can't get the Internet time to synchronize try and find a 3rd party utility to fix this for you.

    Thanks

WITH Direcway Satellite; Reregistered the ehepgdat.dll and all is well. NOTE!!! Regasm.exe is not always in the same location on all machines. I suggest you unhide hidden files and folders and show system files... (My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/View/ & uncheck "Hide protected system files..." and add a check to "Show hidden files and folders". Open drive C: and browse to c:windowsmicrosoft.netframework and see what the folder name is for v.1.1.???? and follow Aron's suggestion above and reiterated here: %windir%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv1.1.????regasm.exe %windir%ehomeehepgdat.dll Replace ???? with whatever numbers you found when you browsed to it.

The reasoning behind using %windir% as apposed to c:windows is that windows may not be installed at c:windows while %windir% will locate windows and all subfolders perfectly.

Addendum:-) I just checked my wifes PC and found the regasm in c:windowsmicrosoft.netframeworkv2.0.50727

There were 2 other folders beside it with v.?.???? names so you may have to check them all... ALSO you don't need to unhide anything. How presumptuous of me.

Hi Brian and Mario - Unless you still have old beta versions of the .NET Framework on your system, regasm.exe should always be located in the same folder on every system - for the .NET Framework 1.0 it will be in %windirMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv1.0.3075, for the .NET Framework 1.1 it will be in %windirMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv1.1.4322, and for the .NET Framework 2.0 it will be in %windirMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727.

Hi Mario - You should have the .NET Framework 1.0 (because it comes with the OS for Media Center), and the .NET Framework 1.1 if you are running Update Rollup 2.  You might also have the .NET Framework 2.0 but that is not required for Media Center to function correctly.

Guide download requires that the system clock be set correctly on your machine.  I am not sure why it would fail to synchronize when you try to do that via the control panel though.  Can you try to manually change your clock time and see if that helps?

Don’t know if this is any help to you, but, whenever I have this problem I also have a Time Sync problem.

I have just been trying for the last hour to download the EPG, but then, after reading your blog and some other sites, tried this:

I stopped and restarted the Windows Time service AND the Media Centre Scheduler Service, as I did this the guide started to download.

This might have just been a fluke but thought it was worth sharing.

Sorry Aaron, delete previous incomplete message.

Okay I have a new one.  In my home I have several computers networked together using a linksys routher/switch and all share the same internet connection Dircway Satelite broadband modem.  I have a dell xps computer with Media center loaded and I set it up for Antenna tv source and it able to download the guide without any problems.  Now I also have an HP Media Center where I set it up for a satelite connection but It will not download the guide through the same internet connection.  What gives?

    DAN MAHER

If you could please give me detailed instructions on how your were able to set up a public proxy to make this work on your Direcway I would sure appreciate it.  What other of Aaron's steps did you have to perform?  Thanks.

    Hi folks,

I followed a lot of the instructions above.  I experimented with the public proxy idea because I have Direcway.

I changed my LAN settings to use a public proxy that I found on a google search ans sure enough the guide downloaded on the second try.  I got up to 3% on the first try and something happened, but it was better than 0%.  Second try the guide (Dish Network) downloaded completely.  It even let me pick my local Dish with the zip code entry.  This is the public proxy I used 66.177.140.221 port 3128.  This should work for people with Direcway.  This was done after a clean install.

Well I wonder if other people had a simlar problems as i did. I had seen in some places mentioning of date issues. I tried to sync time with internet, and it would fail. So after several days of trying the other suggestions found here. still didn't work. So I google'd tonite for a 3rd party program to sync with internet.my clock was off by .746 seconds. PRESTO I was able to download the guide.

    April 06, 2006
for time synchronization try setting the service up a new:

    1. Start->Run-> cmd.exe
    2. net stop w32time
    3. w32tm.exe /unregister
    4. w32tm.exe /register
    5. net start w32time
(I just did run commands with the 2-5 steps and it worked too without command prompt)

Seems that SSL and HTTPS have to be open on port 80 and 443 for the guide to update. Hope this helps someone.

When is this going to be corrected?  Yes, I have DirecWay, but this is obviously a Microsoft problem.  I can update every other program on my Sony Vaio with MCE, but the guide listings update is a roll of some really bad dice.

At least Microsoft should give us an alternative process of downloading the guides and updating the guide manually until they figure out they should fix it instead of facing (yet another) class action or federal lawsuit.

Uggggggggggh this is driving me insane.  I was stuck with this issue awhile ago.  I tried everything and ended up reinstalling.  On a fresh install the EPG downloads fine.  But after installing some programs (azureus, netlimiter,KAV) it started to fail.  I uninstalled all of the programs but it did not fix it.  I retried all the above fixes...  Pleeeease tell me I dont have to reinstall again.

Hi James - I am not familiar with the software that you mention, but if any of them restrict the ability of programs on your system to access to the internet then that could explain this issue (and the name "netlimiter" sounds like it might be designed to do something like that).  You need to have the ability to access HTTP and HTTPS internet sites with the ehsched.exe process in order for Media Center guide download functionality to work correctly.  Can you please check and see if any of those programs are limiting the ability of Media Center to connect to the internet?

  • Anonymous
    April 20, 2006
Yeah Netlimiter is a way to cap uploads and downloads on certain processes.  So I uninstalled it completely but the problem remained.  I don't have any firewall enabled.  I even tried bypassing the wireless/router and plugging directly into the cable modem.  Still no go.

Hi James - Some of the other software on your system might be restricting the ability of Media Center's ehsched.exe process from accessing the internet.  Can you check the other software you have installed and see if you can narrow down which of them is causing this issue on your system?  Since it worked fine before installing the additional software, I think it must be one of them that is causing this, but it is hard to say which one without knowing exactly what you have installed on your system.

Hi John - I'm sorry that you're running into this issue.  Likely one of the suggestions in the blog post above will help (I have seen items 3 and 4 be most likely to help for DirecWay systems).  I would suggest contacting your Media Center computer manufacturer or your internet provider if you need detailed assistance with performing the steps above.

Hrmmm I just uninstalled a bunch of stuff and now I'm getting Code-33

Tried a few times at about an hour apart and still getting code 33.  Guessing its not really a  content server issue.

Currently the stuff I have installed is Azureus, daemon tools, APC powerchute, power dvd, Kaspersky, divx, xvid, VNC, MBM5, turtle beach Montego control panel, firefox, winrar, nvidia decoder.  The rest is driver stuff.

    dangordon,
Just find the folder in Explorer and rename it...

    Aaron,
I tried a few things tonight.  Reinstalled MCE twice.

After the first reinstall I ran all of windows updates, installed Montego DDL Drivers, VNC, JRE 1.5, azureus, daemon tools, winrar, nvidia decoder,MBM5, also changed the security alerter thing, moved the paging file to my second HD, disabled hibernate, and turned off the firewall.
The first time I tried to get the guide after walking through the setup it timed out and gave the error-13...

On the second reinstall I did all the updates again, installed all the software, also installed KAV this time, but I didnt change any windows settings(page file, hibernate, security center, left firewall on).  Didnt touch any of those settings so they are all at default.  Now the guide downloads fine.

The order I did some of the windows updates was different.  I guess that might have some difference but I doubt it.

Hi Ronald - The Media Center guide download does not have any special logic that would prevent it from working on any specific internet service provider, and our test lab includes various types of internet connectivity for guide download test scenarios, including dial-up, broadband and satellite.

Nearly all of the DirecWay issues I have heard of from customers so far were related to proxy bypass configurations or the DirecWay web accelerator interfering with the ports that guide download communicates on (80 and 443).

The Media Center teams are continually working to make guide download functionality more reliable, but in cases where proxy servers are not configured to allow the guide download service to access the internet, there is not really anything that can be done.

It might help for you to contact DirecWay and/or your computer manufacturer for some more detailed troubleshooting on your system to see if there are any configuration issues that could be causing this.  I'm sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused you.

  • Anonymous
    May 07, 2006
Hi Aaron - As with most that refuse to take responsibility for a problem such as this, you state one thing and then contradict it in the next sentence.

"The Media Center guide download does not have any special logic that would prevent it from working on any specific internet service provider ...
    ...
or the DirecWay web accelerator interfering with the ports that guide download communicates on (80 and 443)."

NO!  All Microsoft has to do is to provide an environment which does not interfere with the way that DirecWay operates.  This is something that seemingly everyone other than Microsoft has accomplished.

Microsoft has seemingly decided to not fix a process that leads to failure on at least one specific internet service provider.

Just LISTEN for a second, instead of denying responsibility.

I can update EVERYTHING through my DirecWay system except ONE (actually two, more on this later) thing.  Why is this?

I have no problem with SSL and HTTPS with any process except for ONE.  Why is this?

Because that ONE process is BROKEN.  PERIOD.

Answer me this then.  Why is it that synchronization through "Internet Time" almost always fails with time.windows.com through MCE (and ONLY on my MCE machine) and almost never fails through time.nist.gov?

Both failures appear to be related to timeout issues, as my machine can contact the update guide server, but then does the "0%, 1%" failure dance, or it gets to the "magic" 6% or 7% before failure.

Looks like a timeout issue and not the nonsensical (and insulting and obsfucational) red herring proxy server suggestion.

Proxy server issues are fail/no fail in nature, so that is not applicable in this case.

So now, you can fall back on the "web accelerator" blame game, which again, seemingly only occurs in ONE process.

But, this is nonsense as well, as the web accelerator is disabled on DirecWay for HTTPS traffic.

"It might help for you to contact DirecWay and/or your computer manufacturer ..."

More nonsense.  This is a known problem with the MCE guide update process and is not platform specific, and as the DirecWay system works with everything except this ONE process, it is an insult for you to suggest the above.

If you want me to capture logs, etc. in order to help Microsoft do their job, then all you have to do is ask.

In the meantime, please provide a web (or FTP) site, like every competent company provides, that would allow me to download the guides directly when there are problems with the "standard" update process.

    Looking Forward, Ronald Carter

Hi Ronald - I'm very sorry for the inconvenience that this issue has been causing you.  In general, I try to provide tips and workarounds on my blog, but they don't work in all scenarios, and at this point, I have helped you as well as I know how to.

The official technical support mechanism for Media Center functional problems is to contact your computer manufacturer, which is why I suggested that in my previous post.

The Media Center guide download log files should be located in the directory named something like C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftehomeEPGTraceHelper.  It would likely be helpful for you to have those files handy when contacting technical support because they will probably ask for them early on in their debugging process.

Also, the reason I suggest that this error is somehow proxy related is that all of the cases I have heard of in the past with error code 13 are related to proxy server configuration problems.  That is not to say there are not other potential causes of guide download issues, but those have other root causes and different error codes (and are described in more detail at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/490466.aspx).  I'm sorry that you found this proxy configuration suggestion to be a red herring (or nonsensical or insulting or obsfucational).  I ensure you that none of those were my intention here.  I was simply basing my suggestions on my past experience with this type of issue.

Two weeks ago all was well in Media Center land ... now I too am seeing error code 13 and error code 4 for Media Center in the event viewer, and NO epg data.  What happened to cause this??? Microsoft? Or perhaps my ISP, Adelphia???

None of the suggestions above have worked, and without the guide MCE is useless to me. I am also seeing the problem with the time sync failing, I can restart the service and all is well, but then it fails again.

How do I get tech support for this issue? I am an MSDN subscriber and will perhaps try that avenue ...

I forgot to add above that my problem is only with MCE on Vista RC1. I can use the MCE XP version on my same set up without any problems.
Can you tell me if this is a common bug with Vista RC1 and if it is what are the recommended fixes or workarounds.

    Many Thanks

I am posting on your blog because you seem to be the authority on getting MC Guide issues worked out. I recently set up my MC computer with my AFN satellite system.  (I am stationed over in Japan.)  And while the AFN schdule information is actually in the system under zip code 96349 (The FPO AP zip code), the schedule that is provided is shifted for the Central time zone.   My question; Is there a way to trick the system, short of changing the system clock and disabling the MS clock sync function? Thanks, Josh Perry

Hi Jperry13 - I don't know enough about how the guide functionality was implemented behind the scenes and I also haven't heard of a case like this in my past experience, so I'm not sure what to suggest as a workaround here.  You might want to post a question on the Microsoft.Public.Windows.MediaCenter newsgroup or one of the Media Center forums like http://www.thegreenbutton.com and hopefully someone there will be able to assist.

Vista Media Center writes detailed log information to the following file when retrieving guide listings: C:ProgramDataMicrosofteHomeEPGtracehelperDefaultDomain-MediaCenterService.xml I opened this file and found that the actual error I'm getting (the one that's causing the "Error Code 13" message) is "Failure attempting to download new Guide data. Unable to add files to bits job".  Does that mean anything to anybody?  Here's a snippet of the lines leading up to the error:  Notice the warnings about a failure to upload HMS data.  Could that be related to the problem? <event level="Error" source="Media Center Guide" time="2007:03:18 04:30:04:111243" eventid="13" category="0">Failure attempting to download new Guide data. BigStickCarpet: I have the same issue in Vista. When I look in my log I also see: IOException in getting files from HmsFilePath System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException: Could not find a part of the path 'C:ProgramDataMicrosofteHomeHms'. I, indeed, do not have this path. I'm not even sure what HMS is. Anyone know? Do other people have this path? In the beginning of the log you see MediaCenter trying to send an HMS file and failing. I wonder if this is why the entire guide-download process is failing for some of us.

Forgot to mention, that HSM path does NOT exist. I tried to give everyone permissions to the eHome directory thinking that MediaCenter was unable to create that directory. (I have my MC services running under a different user.) But still no luck.

I hate to keep leaving comments but I just set the services back to NETWORK SERVICE and now I can download the guide. I guess I will have to reconfigure my media server to allow Everyone access to the media....any ideas on how to get MC to work when it is running under a different user?

#3 (adding ehSched.exe to the Windows Firewall Exception List) worked for me when I encountered this problem on one of my Vista Ultimate SP1 machines. Thanks!

I also was constantly recieveing error code#13. The Guide would download as much as 20% and then I would recieve the #13 error I found after synchronizing the time it would still have the same behavior. However disabling the Windows Firewall during the download seem to do the trick, the entire update downloaded successfully. Afterwards I re-enabled the firewall !
