Final version of Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) v5.0 available for download

A while back, I posted a set of instructions that can be used to suppress application compatibility warning dialogs that can appear when installing and/or running Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 on Windows Vista.  Those instructions referenced a beta version of the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) v5.0.

To summarize the above links, ACT v5.0 includes inventory and test tools and documentation to evaluate and mitigate application compatibility issues before deploying Microsoft Windows Vista, updates from Windows Update, or a new version of Internet Explorer on your systems.  I encourage you to check out this toolkit if you are evaluating Windows Vista and/or want to assess the readiness of your applications for new versions of Windows or Internet Explorer.

    Hi, this is a useful toolkit but it is designed with the enterprise in mind (read: too hard to use for ISVs!) When I try to install it asks for all sorts of things like SQL server, which I don't have Are there anywhere instructions on how to test a single application on the desktop without worrying about computers the other side of the world? :) thanks nikos

    Hi Umeca74 - Unfortunately, this tool does require a SQL Server.  However, you can install the free express edition from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/ and it will work fine. You do not necessarily have to use the ACT v5.0 tool to test your application, and instead you can use published Windows Vista development guidelines such as the links at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa904987.aspx and the white paper linked at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/11/11/white-paper-with-uac-development-information-for-windows-vista.aspx. However, if possible, I'd suggest trying to install SQL Express and the ACT v5.0 tool to try to automate some of this app-compat testing.
