April 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista now available for download

There is a new cumulative update package available for download today that applies to Windows Vista Media Center systems.  This cumulative update is called the April 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista, and is also known as KB932818, and is available in both x86 and x64 versions.

This update includes the following enhancements to Media Center functionality (which are also described in more detail in this knowledge base article):

  • Ability to host 32-bit ActiveX controls on the 64-bit version of Media Center - this fixes the issue that I previously described in this blog post, and will allow a much larger range of Online Media content within the 64-bit version of Media Center; note that new items will not appear in Online Media on 64-bit systems until after KB932818 has been installed and then the system has had a chance to get another regularly scheduled Online Media content update
  • Video playlist support for Media Center extenders
  • Improved caching to reduce the amount of data that needs to be downloaded in some Online Media and Windows Media Center Presentation Layer web application scenarios

This update also includes the following bug fixes:

  • Media Center does not correctly recognize some combo tuners (KB929011)
  • Video playback may stop when resizing the Media Center window (KB932753)
  • Video may freeze when playing some DVDs
  • Playing a DVD using autorun may result in a "tuner not found" error
  • Cover art for recorded TV movies may not appear in the DVD library view
  • The wrong photo may be rotated when rotating photos during a slide show
  • Deleting photos may result in an error stating "The URL contains one or more invalid characters."

If you are running Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate editions and using Media Center, I highly encourage you to install the April 2007 cumulative update (KB932818) on your system.

    I have tried to install this update on my PC (it's running Vista Home Premium x86) and it gives me an error message saying that this update does not apply to my system. Since I have been having difficulties getting my Windows Media Center to recognize the signal from my combo TV tuner, it seems like something I need. I've also tried installing the June version (KB935652) with the same result. According to the Knowledge Base articles, my system meets the requirements for the updates. I am wondering what's wrong with my system that these updates won't install.

    Hi Erich1970 - I suggest trying to install the newer June 2007 update that is described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935652 and see if that helps in this scenario.

    I (also) have tried installing both updates (April & June) and they (also) tell me that the updates do not apply to my system.  I have a Gateway GM5474 running Vista Home Premium with an Asus Combo 210-E Rev 2.01 tuner card.  Gateway sent me a new tuner card because the original would not work - but now that I have the same problem with the new one I believe the issue is with Vista Media Center.  Is there anyway to get these updates to install on my computer?  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Hi D4R - I haven't heard of any cases yet where these packages report that they are not applicable on Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate systems.  Is it possible that you already have them installed (they will report "not applicable" if they are already installed unfortunately)?  You can check by going to the Programs and Features control panel, choosing the View Installed Updates link, and looking for items named "Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB932818)" and "Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB935652)" If they are already installed and your tuner still does not work, or if they are not installed and report that they are not applicable, I suggest that you contact Microsoft technical support for more in-depth troubleshooting assistance.  You can find contact info at http://support.microsoft.com.     Hi Donemilio - This blog post is about Windows Vista Media Center, not Windows XP.  I don't really have expertise troubleshooting this type of login problem, so I'm not sure what to suggest here.  You may want to post a question on one of the Windows XP public newsgroups and see if someone there can suggest some steps for you to try to use to troubleshoot this issue. I'm sorry I'm not able to be more helpful in this scenario.
