MS Word 2019 Every time I press the space bar i get a dot between the words

I am writing a report on MS Word and find that every time I press the space bar I get a dot in between the words. Why. Do I need to get rid of them? How?

    On the Home tab, click on the backwards P icon to hide or showing invisible formatting characters like spaces. Or choose File>Options>Display and uncheck the option for Spaces.
