Detecting Setup Status

[The feature associated with this page, Windows Media Format 11 SDK, is a legacy feature. It has been superseded by Source Reader and Sink Writer. Source Reader and Sink Writer have been optimized for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft strongly recommends that new code use Source Reader and Sink Writer instead of Windows Media Format 11 SDK, when possible. Microsoft suggests that existing code that uses the legacy APIs be rewritten to use the new APIs if possible.]

When the redistribution executable runs on a computer, it records its installation status in the registry as an HRESULT value. The installation status is stored in the InstallResult registry entry under the following subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup

The InstallResult registry entry has the following form.

Name	Type	Value
InstallResult	REG_DWORD	An HRESULT that indicates whether Windows Media Player installation was successful and whether a restart is needed.

 

The following code will set the fSucess and fRebootNeeded variables to True or False, as appropriate, based on the HRESULT value written by Windows Media setup in the component redistribution package.
