Allow non-administrator users to install printers on macOS
By default, installing printers on macOS requires users to be administrators. This default is controlled by the policy settings in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
and can be changed.
If your users' devices are managed by an MDM solution like Intune or jamf, you can use a script to update the file and remove administrative privileges from the authorization policy. See the example script below.
Instructions
- Update the
<Limit>
directive on line 59 to addCUPS-Add-Modify-Printer
. This tag is the default access group with noRequire
clause, so making this change allows any user to install/delete/modify printers. - Update the
<Limit>
directive on line 75 to removeCUPS-Add-Modify-Printer
. This access group requires@SYSTEM
permissions, so we want to remove that requirement.

If you have not modified your cupsd.conf
file in other ways, you can copy/paste this content exactly. Otherwise, it serves as a reference. The original file is also below, for comparison.
