FAQ - Universal Print on macOS

Which versions of macOS are supported?

The Universal Print app requires macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 or later.

Is Universal Print supported on iOS?

Not yet, but iOS support is on the roadmap!

Is a license required to print using Universal Print on macOS?

No additional licenses are required. Printing from macOS is included with all Universal Print eligible licenses.

Can Universal Print be provisioned for users automatically by using MDM or Intune?

Organization administrators can provision the Universal Print app by using MDM or Intune, but users will need to sign in and select printer(s) themselves.

We plan to enable system-wide single sign-on and printer provisioning in the future.

Are printers installed per-user on macOS?

Once installed, printers are displayed in the system dialog for all users of the Mac. However:

  • Print jobs are submitted on behalf of the currently logged-in user
  • If the user hasn't been given permission to access a printer, their print jobs will fail if sent to that printer
