Warranty on assets and asset types

Completed

In the previous unit, you learned how to create a warranty agreement. Now, you will associate the agreement to an asset. You can perform this task by adding the warranty agreement to an asset type so that it covers all assets in that asset type, or you can add the warranty agreement to a specific asset.

The following steps explain how to set up a warranty on an asset type and an asset.

Set up a warranty on an asset type

To add a one-year warranty to the Contoso Air Compressor, you will create a new asset type default and then establish a new warranty to the new asset type default.

  1. Go to Asset Management > Setup > Asset types > Asset type defaults.
  2. Select New.
  3. From the Asset type drop-down menu, select Air Compressor.
  4. Select Contoso from the Manufacturer drop-down menu.
  5. Select the type of model from the Model drop-down menu, if necessary.
  6. On the General FastTab, go to the Vendor warranty drop-down menu and select 1 YR.
  7. Optional: Add spare parts on the Spare parts FastTab.
  8. Optional: Add maintenance plans to this asset type in the Maintenance plans FastTab.
  9. Select Save.

Set up a warranty on an asset

You can also add warranty information on a specific asset. Follow these steps to add the warranty information to the COM-001 Air Compressor:

  1. Go to Asset Management > Common > Assets > All assets.
  2. Select COM-001 Air Compressor from the list of assets and then select Edit. The COM-001 Air Compressor asset details page appears.
  3. Go to the Vendor FastTab and, in the Vendor warranty section, select 1 YR from the Warranty drop-down menu.
  4. Enter when the warranty starts in the Warranty start field. This date is usually the day when the asset was purchased. Based on the warranty time frame, the end date is automatically entered in the Warranty end field.

Now that a warranty has been associated with this air compressor, whenever you create a work order, and provided that the work order falls within the warranty period, you will receive a notification about the active warranty and will be asked if you want to cancel the work order.
