Educator review of a Reading Progress assignment
Reading Progress uses autodetect to track reading speed and accuracy and identify learners’ expressiveness (prosody). Autodetect supports 116 languages and locales. If the educator so chooses, it also evaluates learners’ understanding of the passage they read.
The educator review process of a Reading Progress assignment includes three categories:
- Accuracy
- Expression
- Comprehension
In the Accuracy section, educators can watch and listen to each learner read the passage. If they selected the options during assignment creation, educators can also view the reading speed (in words per minute) and accuracy rate.
The autodetected accuracy rate is based on:
- Mispronunciations
- Omissions
- Insertions
Self-corrections and repetitions are also documented but don’t count against the learner’s accuracy rate.
In the Expression section, educators can evaluate learners’ prosody including:
- Monotonality
- Failure to pause for a period
- Inflection on question marks and exclamation points
- Extended pauses
- Rushed reading
Educators can control Reading Coach’s pronunciation sensitivity settings based on their learners’ reading levels. For example, for younger readers or learners who are new to the language, educators may want to decrease the pronunciation sensitivity (accuracy) and increase the unexpected pause length (expression). If the assignment is for more experienced readers, educators may want to select a higher sensitivity level (accuracy) and shorten the unexpected pause length (expression). There's also a standard setting, which all assignments are assigned by default. Educators can set up the pronunciation and expression sensitivities before or after an assignment is given.
In both the Accuracy and Expression sections, educators can select an Accuracy card or Expression card to access an Insights dashboard for that category. For example, if an educator selects the Word per minute card, an Insights dashboard pops up automatically with the learner's statistics.
Educators can also override the autodetect evaluation of a learner's reading. For example, if a learner read a word correctly but it was erroneously marked as a mispronunciation, the educator can manually select the word and then Mark as correct.
If the educator assigned reading comprehension questions, they can find the learner’s answers in the Comprehension section. Multiple-choice questions are autograded. Educators must review long-answer responses manually to finalize the learner’s reading comprehension grade.
If they chose to include a Reading Coach activity, the educator can access a report of the learner’s challenge word practice.
The educator may leave feedback for the learner before returning the assignment. Feedback options include written, video, or other attachments.
