Environment strategy alignment scenarios

Completed

This unit presents environment strategy scenarios.

Have a data migration environment strategy in place

Data migration performance and timing differs in various environments.

Patterns

Consider the following effective approaches (patterns) when you’re establishing a data migration environment strategy:

  • Avoid comparing or extrapolating performance testing results on a tier-1 environment to performance on a tier-2+ environment(s).
  • Plan to have at least one tier-2+ data migration environment based on your volume.
  • Plan to have a controlled golden configuration environment, which is secured to a core set of users and will be managed throughout the implementation project by using change management.

Anti-patterns

Make sure that you avoid these pitfalls (anti-patterns) when establishing a data migration environment strategy:

  • Lack of environment planning
  • Lack of configuration tracking/documentation

Define a clear golden configuration strategy

The customer hasn’t purchased add-on environments for finance and operations apps. The environment strategy needs to allow for golden configuration, testing (including data migration), and mock cutover.

Patterns

The implementation team should have a strategy for where configurations will be managed and how they’ll move configurations from one environment to another for pre and post go-live events.

  • Ensure that a clear golden configuration governance plan is in place. This verification includes documenting and restricting access, the process of testing the configuration before putting it into golden configuration and ensuring that no transactional posting happens in golden configuration.
  • Enable database logging for changes on the golden configuration to trace changes for setup and parameter tables.

Anti-patterns

Avoid the following poor practices (anti-patterns) when you’re defining a clear golden configuration strategy:

  • Giving non-essential users access to the golden configuration environment
  • Creating transactions in the golden configuration environment
