Manual update of asset counters
Many assets can have counters for such things as the number of hours that the asset has been in operation or a quantity that has been produced. For instance, a counter might be used to track how many hours a forklift has been operated for, or a packing machine might have a counter for how many of an item has been produced.
Another scenario where asset counters are beneficial is when you have child assets of a parent asset. For example, one machine can be composed of various parts that are also assets. In those cases, you can set the system to automatically update the counter on the child assets when you update the parent.
Counters are set up in Asset management > Setup > Asset types > Counters. The following image shows an example of an hours counter that is used in production. In this situation, when you update the parent asset, it will automatically adjust the counter in any child assets.
The counters that you set up for your assets are determined on your individual business needs.
You can associate a counter with different asset types. In the following example, Miles is set up as a counter for trucks and vehicles. If any child assets are associated with one of those vehicles, the mileage that is entered on the parent will apply to the child.
Use the term register when you enter a value on a counter. To perform this task, follow these steps:
- Go to Asset management > Assets > All assets and select the asset.
- From the Asset tab, in the Preventive section, select Counters. The Asset counters page appears with a list of all previous counter registrations that were made on this asset.
- Select New to create a registration. A new line appears with the asset ID automatically entered in the Asset field.
- In the Counter field, select the relevant counter from the drop-down menu. The menu will only show the counters that are related to the asset type. After you have made your selection, the related unit is automatically entered in the Unit field.
- In the Registered field, select the date and time that you want to use for this counter registration.
- In the Value field, enter the number since the last counter registration, or enter the total count number in the Aggregated value field.
When you are working with asset counters, keep the following in mind:
- When you install a new counter on an asset, you need to register the change on the asset on the Asset counters page. After that task is complete, you need to create two registration lines that have identical timestamps.
- The first line is for the counter that is being replaced.
- On the second line that is related to the new counter, select the Counter reset check box. The Totals field shows you the sum of the counter totals of all registered values on that counter type.
- If you have an asset that is using a maintenance plan with a "Once from..." or "Once reached..." interval type, and the Counter reset check box is also selected, then that counter is still active because you created a separate counter line and a start-over with a new counter.
