Introduction to game-based learning
You may already use game-based learning (GBL) in your teaching, or GBL may be a new concept for you. GBL is a teaching method that uses "learning through games" to deliver instruction, using games as educational tools (Wu et al., 2012). These games can be either digital or non-digital. This approach can be powerful, combining the fun and engagement of games with the achievement of specific learning outcomes of traditional lessons.
The motivational psychology underlying game-based learning enables students to interact with educational content in a fun and dynamic manner (Pho & Dinscore, 2015).
As we learn about Minecraft Education, we’ll focus on the exciting world of digital game-based learning (DGBL), where digital games serve as the primary teaching instruments. The true essence of GBL, and particularly DGBL, lies in striking the perfect balance between gameplay and the achievement of specific learning outcomes. This balancing act is similar to walking a tightrope: veer too much towards explicit learning objectives, and you might as well be conducting a traditional lesson, missing the unique benefits of game-based learning. However, if gameplay dominates, the experience might become indistinguishable from typical recreational video gaming.
A critical point to understand is that game-based learning, whether through Minecraft Education or any other platform, shouldn’t be perceived merely as a reward or a filler activity for those rainy Friday afternoons in class, golden time with younger students, or to ensure quiet when a substitute teacher is present for the day. It isn’t about keeping students busy or quiet. It's a powerful learning strategy designed to support and enhance specific learning outcomes, enriching the lessons you already deliver and your teaching practice.
Navigating this can be challenging, yet Minecraft Education is crafted to support this balance. The game and its accompanying resources are structured to seamlessly integrate gameplay and learning outcomes. Whether through the gameplay itself or the educational materials provided on the Minecraft Education website, educators are equipped to maintain this delicate balance without compromising on either aspect.
