Reap the rewards of reading

Completed

Reading for self-reflection and growth comes from internal motivation. This type of reading helps learners:

  • Improve their reading skill
  • Think critically
  • Empathize with others
  • Become confident lifelong learners

Some learners might need external motivation to practice reading because they lack interest, confidence, or enjoyment in reading or are dealing with distractions. Reading Coach history gives learners an opportunity to track their own growth with features like achievements, badges, and unlocking gamified elements and experiences.

Achievements and badges

Reading Coach tracks learners' progress along the way, letting them show friends, family members, educators, and others how much progress they've made. Achievements and badges also visually represent hard work and accomplishments. Immediate feedback and targeted practice ensure that learners build confidence and receive the encouragement they need to build healthy reading habits.

Right after each reading session, Reading Coach encouragingly displays the reader's valid fluency measures in:

  • Time spent reading
  • Any badges they earned
  • Accuracy rate
  • Reading time (in minutes) needed to reach the next achievement
  • Words they struggled with

Reading Coach keeps track of lifetime reading activity and milestones as well. On the My Progress page, learners can review the past week, previous 30 days, or all-time data for:

  • Total time spent reading
  • Number of reading sessions
  • Average accuracy
  • Average correct words per minute (CWPM)
  • Achievements
  • Stories

Learners earn badges for reaching certain milestones along their reading journey to encourage effort and develop motivation. Badges like the "First timer" badge encourage readers to read again, while accuracy milestones encourage readers to do their best when reading a story.

Badges include:

  • First AI-created story
  • 3 readings with an accuracy score over 90%
  • 5 readings with an accuracy score over 90%
  • 10 readings with an accuracy score over 90%
  • 20 readings with an accuracy score over 90%
  • 100% accuracy on a reading
  • 3-day reading streak
  • 5-day reading streak
  • 10-day reading streak

Reading streaks

Reading streaks are specifically designed to encourage learners to return to reading. Streaks track reading engagement over the course of a seven-day period. Instead of requiring consecutive days of activity, the streaks allow for flexibility within a seven-day period to accommodate readers who might not have access to their devices over the weekend. If a reader engages three times within seven days, they can earn a three-day badge. If they read five times in seven days, they earn a five-day badge, and if they read every day, they earn a seven-day badge.

Unlock story elements

Each time a learner spends 20 minutes reading with Reading Coach, they unlock a new character or setting they can use to create more AI-powered stories. They can choose to keep an unlocked story element or swap it for another unlockable option. They can see all the story elements they earn as part of the "Create a Story" experience and everything they've earned on the Achievements page.

Achievements in Reading Coach transform the learning journey into a rewarding adventure filled with milestones to reach and celebrate. By using these features, learners can maintain a high level of motivation, continuously improve their skills, and find joy and satisfaction in their progress.
