Education Data Lake Export Alternatives

After careful consideration we are not onboarding new customers to the Education Data Lake Export feature. We understand that this might be inconvenient.
We will retiring Education Data Lake Export on December 31, 2024. We appreciate your understanding during this transition.
Education Data Lake Export provided a copy of bulk roster and activity data. The activity data included basic user activity such as Teams Channel message interactions by teachers and students, or Teams Assignments activity such as assignments submitted or returned. Limited data for Microsoft’s Learning Accelerator was available for Reading Progress and Reflect.
For roster data, we suggest using the Education endpoints in the Microsoft Graph or obtaining the data directly from your Student Information System (SIS). Activity data can be obtained in summarized format from Microsoft Graph or in detailed format from the Office 365 Management API.

Education APIs on Microsoft Graph
The education APIs in Microsoft Graph enhance Microsoft 365 resources and data with information that is relevant for education scenarios, including schools, students, teachers, classes, and enrollments. The resources are typically enhanced with data that is synced from your Student Information System.

Teams Assignment data
The education APIs include assignments resources that you can use to interact with the assignment services in Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams in Microsoft 365 for Education is based on the same education assignments APIs.

Learning Accelerators data
The Leaders Insights API, now in public preview, provides activity data for Microsoft's Learning Accelerators Reading Progress and Reflect.
Office 365 User Activity data
Microsoft 365 Graph Usage Reports
Microsoft 365 Graph Usage Reports API can provide data from Microsoft Teams and other Microsoft 365 applications. The data includes usage data from Teams for user and team activity, Outlook user activity, SharePoint user activity, OneDrive user activity, and more.

Office 365 Management API
The Office 365 Management APIs provide a single extensibility platform for all Office 365 customers' and partners' management tasks, including service communications, security, compliance, reporting, and auditing. The audit events can be used to obtain user activity for Microsoft Entra Identity, Teams, and core Office 365 services including SharePoint and OneDrive.

Benefits to the Office 365 Management API
Event recency: Events from the Office 365 Management API are often available within minutes, delivering user activity data faster than Education Data Lake export.
Number of available services and events: The Office 365 Management API covers a wider range of Microsoft’s online services and a richer set of audit events compared to Education Data Lake Export. For more information, see Office 365 Management Activity API schema.
Continual Development: The Office 365 Management API continues to add support for new services and audit events. The API now supports Microsoft Copilot, which isn't available through Education Data Lake Export.
